hello all. Names tom. I'm from Westminster ca. Been a member a few days. Learned quite a lot from reading different threads and forums past few days.

I've been fishing all my life. Started doing long range shooting the last few years. Did a guided pig hunt a year ago to get a feel for and learn the sport. I'm all over California because my family is all up and down the coast so traveling to hunts won't be an issue. I travel to Mendocino quite often for the abalone. I'm looking to learn the entire state for hunting techniques. Hope to meet some of you fellas in the near future and make some new forum friends and hunting buddies. Or fishing buddies. Or shooting buddies.

Welcome to SCH. What are you using for Long Range SHooting? Also what equipment are you using to hunt? "Shotgun, Rifle, Bow?"

Hello nick. I'll be using rifle. Right now I'm using a rem 308 aacsd on a B&c stock and Kristensen 300wm for target/long range. I have a defiance deviant tactical and bartlein 338 on order. Main target would be big game.

Btw that is one hellova hog in your avatar!!! Hoping to have something like that this season!! I only have fish and lobster pics ATM. Lol

Tom,

Welcome to SCH......Right off the bat, you have the right attitude for success in SoCal (or NorCal)......Willingness to travel/drive.....If you haven't tried turkey hunting......Do it.....It's a lot like big game hunting, but you get the excitement of a gobble......Looking forward to seeing pix of your adventures.

Thanks sprig! Looking forward to these future adventures. I figured hunting would be like fishing. 10 years ago I was wondering where everyone was catching fish. 5 years later I've got all kinds of spots and had to figure out a way to buy a new boat to travel further and look for fishing spots passed Catalina. Now I'm capable of making it to Clemente and never come home empty handed. Lots of time, gas, and money. Figure hunting will be the same, but with a lot of hiking. Lol

Now that the fishing season is getting close to the end(not really, probably still got a few more weeks, but you all know what I mean)

I've been doing quite a lot of research on bear hunting and think I know where I'd be scouting/hunting. All of NorCal to the east looks promising but for a newb I think d6 would be a good spot to start/practice/learn some techniques.

What do you think? Is there a zone that would better a newbs chances? Or a zone that can maybe cross my path with pigs as well as bears that aren't private land? Also new on on maps, using it it everyday to learn the features.

Still learning this deer tag stuff. That crap is very confusing.

I hunt D6 about every year. It holds a ton of bear on Public land. But by no means is it easy. What area have you looked at?

I have yet to put some time into the area but I will in a few weeks. To be honest I may not even take a shot the first time if I see one. Just want to get out and explore first.

Would definitely be driving as far as a truck can take me and then hiking to a hilltop and just glass. Learn how to look for signs on the way.

I was thinking along the border of X zones maybe.
