California's new ammo laws are coming on us quickly. There are many frustrating things with this law but I want to ask if anyone on this forum planning on becoming or have a recommended FFL that will accept ammo transactions?

Like most of you, I have been storing up on non-lead / lead ammo that should last me quite a few years but I am completely screwed if I want to buy a new caliber.

Also, I heard we cannot buy it out of state and drive it back legally? Please tell me this isn't true.

This may the final push I need to take a dive into the reloading world.

1st off, many of the new laws pertain to reloading too (powder, bullets, etc.)....As it reads right now, you can buy ammo out of state, but you can only bring back into the state, 50 rounds.....For a rifle, that's not too bad.....For a shotgun guy, that's ridiculous.....I don't know when it takes effect, but I've read where we'll need a card (ID) to buy ammo.....Out of state, or in state.....Other states are already stopping us from buying guns.....Ammo is probably next.

I'm assuming that places like Fine Firearms, Turner's, Big 5, and other folks will get an FFL ammo license.....It just cost more.

David,

From Cal Gun.....It appears that reloading is OK for now.....

The way I read applicable sections of Prop 63, reloaded ammunition is no different than factory ammunition. Bullets, however, are only considered "ammunition" for the purposes of Penal Code sections 30305 and 30306, and those appear to apply to criminals.

The key language in Prop 63 can be found here.

(15) A licensed hunter who purchased the ammunition outside of this state for use in a lawful hunting activity that occurred outside of this state if the person brings or imports no more than 50 rounds into this state and the ammunition is designed and intended for use in the firearm the hunter used in that hunting activity.

i fucking hate this state.

"capable of being fired from a firearm with a deadly consequence"

Components can not be fired. I am sure they will address reloaders, because....you know.....they rob banks and defend their crack cocaine empires with handloads....

1 buy hunting lic. in az
2 pick up ammo from friend who got ammo in bulk for bird hunting.
3 drive with ammo enjoying the freedoms we used to have in calif while in az.
4 stop at state line. ( use on x maps for correct state line boundary)
5 take two boxes and cross the state line. ( wave at guy doing the agricultural inspections )
6 walk back to az and cross again with two boxes.
7 do over and over till all ammo is on the calif side

can a lawyer review this strategy and get back to me please?

just so you can see how lame this is... i can buy ammo in mexico with less restrictions than here in the USA..

California is trying to force all of us hunters and shooters to either give up because it is so hard, or move to a different state.

Not going to lie, moving is more and more tempting. My wife and I are seriously considering moving to Idaho in 2-4 years (for a slower and different pace of life and more freedom.) I grew up in Colorado but most of my friends and family are in Boise are now.

In 25-50 years I fear that California will have very few left from this community

8 move to state other than CA where freedom still exists and libs don't tell u how and where to buy your ammo.. oh and make sure it's non-lead too.

Long story short, this whole thing will turn out to be a big tax on ammo.

shaking head and in total frustration. with this state. soon it will be against the law for any type of shooting or hunting... it's the frog in the pot slowly being cooked and not realizing it.

On a serious note though, how will this new ammo purchasing law work? Will we undergo an initial background check and get some sort of clearance or permit, similar to the handgun safety card? Or will we have to get processed each purchase? The latter doesn't seem feasible at all. Maybe some shop guys can chime in? @NBK, etc.

Going to jump on this as well. I was "told" that this new law will make it so you cannot purchase ammo for other than a weapon that you own, or something along those lines? Anyone heard of anything like this? I usually buy a couple of boxes of ammo for my brother on his birthday...but he has a different caliber rifle than I do.
Rumors can sure get blown WAAAY out of proportion...so, just checking?

CA still needs hunters for money so they can't cut us off. If they lose hunters they also lose federal money as well, which is distributed based on the number of hunting licenses sold. I truly do not think that this is a anti-hunting conspiracy (for the most part) but more of out of touch politicians / liberals in understanding trying to hide the symptoms of the issue (shootings) instead of fixing the source of the problem.

However, we still have a big problem at hand with them outlawing lead and then removing the best source of buying lead-free ammo.

Is there anyone on this forum setting up auto emails to congressmen / govt Brown about the issue? May SCH can add the ability to auto send emails similar to how BHA, RMEF, and other foundations can send emails about public land issues.

We should annoy the crap out of our reps to make sure we are heard, not just for us, but for our kids / grandkids, and so on. Hunting is to important to let non-hunters take it away.

its not that much to read and most of what you hear is bs so spend a few min reading this.

hate to say it but this state is a lost cause.

Now you guys get why we wanted Trump, Gorsuch!!!! The only recourse we have now is SCOTUS. Sad that it has come to this but it is what we made it. Calif is a Liberal state and will be forever end of story. We know that Liberals hate the constitution and what it stands for. We just have to pray that we find relief with the high court and that is FAR from a given.

The Supreme Court is our only hope, but I don't think they will take this. They didn't even take Peruta V. San Diego (Concealed carry). CA is definitely a lost cause, especially with the 9th circuit.

went to phoenix arizona last friday. the gasoline for cars was $2:19-2:29 per gallon there. are we getting ripped off here. not related to the topic. but I was in shock. seeing we pay a lot more here.
same as all the other stuff including ammo now.

Spent about 20 min with CA DOJ regarding ammo sales. The kind lady had me look up the Penal Code for the new law in effect Jan 1 2018. I've included it in this post. Although a pain it's no where near what we've been hearing about. Hope this helps.
