Reservation Excitement

I finally got my first one of the season, haven't had anything going on all year and the day I get drawn is the day I signed my son up to take his hunter safety course....

Drew a low number at Wister, with the little bit of weather and the low number it was tempting to try to convince my wife to take him instead...

Oh well, at least on the next one he will be shooting as well...

Such a great experience at the Hunter safety course. My son (9) was the youngest there by several years. It was a packed house mostly adults and maybe 3 or 4 teens.

I was really proud of how engaged he was the entire day, answering questions, asking questions etc.

The Hunter Ed staff at Rahaugge's is top notch. a really great group of guys that kept the class flowing, fun, and most importantly, educational.

My son was very confident when he took the test and I was very proud when he handed in his test and got 98/100!

we spent a bit of time shooting sporting clays when we were done before heading home.

Now I have my fingers crossed that either he or my daughter get drawn for one of the junior late season waterfowl hunts.

If not we will head to IV for some ECD hunting.

Even if they don’t draw... I’ve heard you can get a good blind sweat lining on the youth hunts... If the ducks ever show???

Also, You may want to look into AZ for youth opportunities. Non-Res youth license is $5. You can start building bonus points for $15 per species. Youth (cow) Elk tags are $65, deer $40, & javelina $30. Minimum age is 10 to hunt big game. Not sure... but, I think you can start building points before age 10.
Feb 13 is deadline for AZ elk & antelope hunts.

Tom,

You'll get on either wildlife area without a res.....Plus many of the clubs open their doors to youth hunters as well.

The bbq or luncheon are 1st class for the kids at both areas.

I did my Hunter Safety at Raahauges, too, the half-day one. I think they definitely did a good job of getting through all the material as fast as possible.

Double Trouble / Steve,

Thank you for the info.

I personally enjoy hunting San Jacinto but with as slow as the season has been down here Im concerned about going there without a reservation as I want him and my daughter to see some birds.

What are your thoughts Steve?

Tom,

I think historically, they shoot about the same.....The one thing that Wister gives you is more spots & a chance at geese.....I haven't been involved in awhile, but San J has a luncheon. Where as Wister has a bbq in the evening.

Great time at either place, if you can stay a little later at Wister. Lots of stuff given away and I think they'll love it, birds or few birds.
