Hi all,

Name is Steve. I'm brand new to the site. Haven't hunted in more years than I like to consider.

Recent event's caused the family to decide it was time to get our self armed. One thing had lead to another and I find my self the proud owner of a match grade .308, a 30-06, a couple of shot guns, and my favorite, my Matthews Chill X. (had the Chill X for a few years, the rest is new to me)

I've booked an Archery Elk hunt in Idaho for the fall, and that got me thinking about hunting opportunities in So Cal. So poked around a bit and stumbled across this place.

I've lived in So Cal for 25 years now, and for some reason never consider this much of a place to hunt. Lived in Texas as a kid and Delaware while in the service and did some hunting in both places.

Any ideas, guidance, and future hunting buddies all welcome.

Thinking of going up to Big Horn Canyon just to knock off the rust and brush up on some skills. Thoughts?

Welcome Steve. With those tools, you are well outfitted to hunt big game out here in the west. Big horn is a good place to knock off the rust. If you can swing it though, IMO hiring a professional guide to take you out and do a fair chase hunt would be a much better investment of time and money. Check out site sponsors like Giant Sequioa, or look up threads on guided hunts for pigs in the Paso Robles area. Also Tejon Ranch has guides available to help you get back in the swing. Those are just some ideas for big game in CA. Many of us also do out of state hunting as you are planning.

Thanks for the welcome. I've been leaning toward Big Horn as it's only 45 minutes or so from the house and I could take a single day off from work, drive the motor home up the night before.

Great suggestion to look at Giant Sequioa's web site. I'll look for stuff on Tejon. I've driven by signs for Tejon Ranch, but never paid much attention before.

I've got a buddy with a 1,000 acres outside of Weatherford TX, with lots of pigs on it. But with the distance involved it's still a week vacation.

I've heard of good pig hunting in So Cal in the San Diego area.

Steve,

Welcome to SCH.....Don answered some of your big game stuff....I'll add there's very very few pigs in San Diego Co.....You mentioned that you had a couple of shot guns. So you may know that dove season opens Sept. 1st. and waterfowl season opens Oct. 22nd......If you'd like to get your feet wet with a few guys that hunt most everything, there's a work party at San Jacinto W.A. this Saturday (not far from you).....More details in the waterfowl forum

Welcome to SCH

Thanks for the welcome. I picked up the shotguns for 3 gun comp and for home defense. (KSG), The work party sounds like it would be fun, but I'm already going to be up on Julian on Saturday.

I'd heard a couple of years ago around the archery range that Southern San Diego was being over run with pigs. I guess the rumor was bad, or they fixed the problem. hmmm...

There are pigs in San Diego county and probably always will be. But the county just completed an extermination project (hunters needed not apply), so the numbers are way down. You can find sign, but you won't see pigs unless you hunt with dogs, and even then you'd have to work very hard and get very lucky.

Per our Fish & Wildlife meeting a week ago, the county folks said they thought only 8 pigs made it through the eradication program......Which consisted of less than a 100 pigs county wide (75 were originally released)......If you think about that, it's a minuet amount for a county the size of San Diego.
