Picked my son up from school at 1500
got home by 1530
unloaded the truck from work and showered with our favorite scent killer.
left house by 1600
Got to the parking spot in d11 by 1630
hiked in to the natural blind in record time
All set up and quiet by 1700
Sat with my boy in the quiet and watched nature go by. We saw lots and lots of quail, cotton tails, a BIG jack and 4 does 3 babys NO bucks. We hope the does with no babys will be out tomorrow so he can fill his A31 either sex tag.
Love hanging out with my Son. My wife elected not to come and we both missed her.
we watched the amazing sun set and Stayed posted up untill a few minutes after legal hunt time and watched the dark come in over the mountain.

hiked out in the dark and back home by 1935.

After last nights hunt my son says he would rather make a few extra bucks helping a friend with a small job then go out for a morning hunt. He makes and saves (good kid)
So after a hard day helping lift a 5th wheel trailer 2"s, we got home and hit it hard again at a new spot we have been eying all year. My wife my son and I all have d11 tags and my son has his a31 either sex. This time all 3 of us headed out and got to the spot about 1600 and found very heavely bedded areas and LOTS of sign with fresh prints in the mud. We set up about 60yards from the bedding and 75 from the stream and heard something BIG romping through the heavy stuff at the stream. We listened and kept seeing glimpses but by 1900 we just could not make it happen. I'm loving hunting 20min from home. Get to sleep in my own bed. Alarm set for an early day tomorrow.

You don't have to bag one to have a fulfilling hunt...but it doesn't hurt...

Best things
Getting at it with the family
Watching my son stalk a sound in the woods
Seeing the sunset in beautiful nature

Tomorrow we will see the sun rise and listen to the mountain wake up.

Hunting is awesome. (But it would be awesome to fill a tag or 2.)

SUCCESS!!! Almost? 1st off have i ever said my wife is AWSOME!!!

The 3 of us got up at 4AM showered again with our scent killer and hit the road. Got to the trail head by 5. Sat down in the the blind area and waited for hunt time. It was 80 at 5am on the road and 55 down by the water My son and i did not bring a jacket (MORONS) My wife was warm and cozy. witnessed a great sunrise. i love listening to nature wake up. well after 4 hrs we called it and hit the road home. We were 5 minutes from the house just inside the Forrest when my wife yells 3 DEER STOP. so we pull over and glass. Now my wife just got her new binos and harness and she has been learning how to spot and estimate distance. She says 2 does and 1 buck at 350 yards. I get the range finder out and on the nose at 345yards. we secure the truck and my son grabs his bow. We get across the wash breaking through bamboo and reeds and come out about 100 yards from the 3 deer. we move slow form one bush to another my wife says she thinks about 75 yards and up about 20 feet. i range it and again right on. as we get closer they spook some what and the big 2x3 is broad side looking right at us at 62yards. My sons bow is set at 70lbs and his last pin is right at 60yards. I call the range and he decides to let it fly. Im watching through the range finder and my wife is watching through her binos. he misses right at knee height and he was perfect left to right. the 3 did not spook hard and fast they just trotted off so we kept on them for about an hour. even got the arrow back. Now i expected my 17year old son that is in great shape would hike and hunt hard for as long as it takes but my wife troopered on through NASTY crap in the water tromped right thought the mud and muck and climbed steep dusty hill sides. She was awesome and if not for her eagle eyes we would not have been able to get a shot off or put the stalk on.

Thats exciting story!
I always enjoy experiencing "almost" events and reading "almost" stories. Some people really get down on themselves for "almost got them".
I like to think "almost" means I'm getting closer to you...and the next time, might be it!
I like the perseverance GSPman.

Almost is waaay better then sitting at home wishing.

We worked hard and got sooo close we consider anything like this a huge win especially since we worked it all out together so well as a team.

Very cool story. As a son who hunts with his father I know first hand that hunts like this are memories that last a lifetime.

i agree i just wish my dad had gotten into hunting earlier in life he is getting pretty slow these days. But we did hike a whole bunch of mountains and climb a whole lot of rocks. nothing is better as a son then hanging out and learning from your dad.
