Recently, turkeys are all on private land and their numbers are way down. Turkeys only live 3-5 years so this 3 year drought has decimated the populations. Consider My Country Club (MCC) for a good chance at turkeys and I think they have a good population management by not allowing Hens or Jakes to be taken (but check on this be cause I not certain).

Just to be honest, as a member of MCC. Do not join it for the turkey hunting... at least, not right now. Numbers are way down and as much as we try to get older members (who have taken many turkeys before) to ease up on jakes. They still get hammered every year. I'm optimistic the numbers will bounce back as we had good recruitment this year, but I expect this upcoming season to be the worst season for MCC and really all of SoCal in recent memory. Hoping for many young birds this season, but very few 2+ year olds.

Turkeys don't stand a chance when some don't lay off for conservation efforts.
Hope their numbers bounce back, fowl play.

I guess it would take DFW to take turkey off the list for that to happen.

I have not hunted turkey this year...and won't for at least another year maybe two.

The population has been hit hard.

People keep shooting hens, and cowards are poaching to be cool, instead of trying to maintain what we have.

That's just how I feel....getting a gobble back for years to come, is alot more important than Facebook.dumb

Yeah i agree that we need to maintain a good population. In socal it seems to be a waste of time to hunt anything out here looks like i have to take it on the road up north

Yeah people hand feed them so they go to safe zones

I don't blame the folks who feed turkeys. I agree with Tom and Kyle that what really hurts is when experienced hunters shoot jakes. Experienced hunters ought to have the self-discipline to pass on a young bird in order to help the flock grow; after all, we claim to be the leading force for conservation, and our actions should show it. That's just my opinion though. It's legal, so they are within their rights.

True people all say that young birds taste better but if your hunter all game should taste the same...

Yeppers, I past on a Jake.

I have hiked down into Barker Valley.........No cake walk........It had turkeys for a long time, but folks I know that hunted it this spring said they saw little to no sign. And it was very dry.

As far as shooting fall turkeys.....Our local chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation is encouraging turkey hunters not to shoot hens or not shooting turkeys at all.....Our local population despite optimism for some recruitment this spring is still in dire straits.

As hunters, it is our responsibility to try and protect and preserve our wild game and turkeys in particular.....I can assure you that non-native species such as wild turkeys are not high on the list of the state of California.

ps.....Shooting jakes is a personal thing IMO......I prefer not too, but totally understand people who do for their 1st turkey (mine was), youth hunters, and when the population can withstand it.

Well, I can tell you there's no turkeys in Trabuco Cyn or at least, I've never received a report of any going that far from SD County......At least Palomar or Barker you have a chance at seeing some.
