Completely new to hunting

Hello everyone,
I'm Brian. I've never hunted a day in my life, but at the age of 34 and with two young children, I've chosen now as a time to learn. A bit about me; I'm former military, used to do a lot of backpacking, love shooting, and I love to eat. I figured hunting would be a good way to combine my interests into something that would benefit my whole family in the way of adventure and good food. I've recently completed the online portion of the hunter safety course and well be taking the follow up class within the next few weeks.

I'm interested in all forms of hunting, especially locally, with my ultimate goal for now being a DIY archery elk hunt in Colorado, when I've gained the experience necessary.

I'm looking forward to interacting with the forum members here to learn all that I can to perform a well thought out, ethical, and hopefully successful harvest when the time comes for me to get out there.

Thanks,
Brain

Brian,

Welcome to SCH......I would pick a certain game species & learn that. Then combo that experience into something else (bigger).....Do you have a shotgun?.....What rifle do you have?.....What bow?

Starting Nov 12th, most everything is open to hunt here in SoCal.....Dove, quail, pheasant, ducks, geese, and even D-16 deer.

Get your license.....Then start you search for either a hunting partner or teaming up with some new guys on here.

The main thing is to ask a lot of questions, reading older threads about your targeted species, and read your regulations.

Good luck & thank you for your service.

Thanks for the welcome.

My interest was piqued after I was taken to an archery range with a friend and then I heard about bow-hunting on a podcast. Went out that week and bought a Hoyt Powermax and have been practicing a few times a week for a little over two months now. I wouldn't say that I'm anywhere near good enough to hunt with it yet, but I'm improving daily and have a formal lesson scheduled for next week.

I have my dad's old 20 gauge shotgun, but I'm looking at the Nova or SuperNova soon, as I'd love to have bird on the dinner menu,

No rifle right now, but I'm sure as I delve into the hunting world, my inventory will grow. I've heard good things about Savage rifles though.

Before being introduced to this site, I thought wild pig would be a good way to learn, but it seems that may be more difficult than I'd been lead to believe. I do know I'd like to hunt birds, and deer and it seems that there are areas here in Southern California where those opportunities are available, so I suppose I'll start my focus there. Any thoughts on this plan, or another species to start off with would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Brian

Welcome, Get ready for the greatest addiction. HUNTING!!!!!!!
Thanks. Seems much more beneficial than some of my other addictive hobbies over the years. Pool cues and fish tanks haven't done much to put food in my belly.

Hello, welcome, thank you for your service.
Since you're new I think I can help for some where to start..
You already know hunting is not killing. Choosing your game is very critical. You mentioned above, back packing, shooting, and eating. You will do lots of back packing, very little shooting, and (especially in my case) very little eating. Indians call me vegetarian.
I've seen plenty get discouraged by not bagging something. So if your that type, start with birds and rabbits.

It is an addiction with severe high and low points. This forum has helped with the demoralizing lows. I think of this place as my group therapy. SCH gives me hope, encouragement, perseverance and knowledge.

Time for me to get off this crap and go hunt. Good luck.

Thanks for the welcome.

I get that I may be hiking with a bow or gun for a while while I figure things out. I also get that I'll have unsuccessful hunts. If I got it right every single time from the get go, it wouldn't be any fun.

The more that I read, the more I think Upland birds and small game may be my best bet to get my toes wet.

Thanks again,
Brian

If you want to get your feet wet with upland, you can always try one of the many upland clubs. Rpclub.com is one.
