Got an invite from a kid I've mentored for a number of years (#24 res).....Despite warm & dead calm conditions, Aaron and I managed 11 ducks.....Included in my limit was a really nice blue-wing drake.....I know of at least 5 taken this year.....In the old days, we used to think blue-wings showing up on the west coast was an indicator of a wet winter.....I sure hope so.....lol

Seriously, I was #8 in the sweatline and ended up at Marsh D. The only bird that flew bye my blind ,was one single drake Greening Teal. Luckily he's now in my freezer. Nothing but flying coots, and a single long line of Ruddies, flying 2 feet off the deck, in my neck of the hood.

Great job on the birds! He is a lucky young man to have a you as a mentor and you are a lucky man to get to spend time in the field passing on your knowledge and enjoying time in the field with the next generation of hunters!! Thanks for the great photos!

I was right before you in the line, our E blind was pretty dead. A couple of widgeon and a teal. Not complaining, but boy did the action really turn off after the fly off.

Aaron really wanted your blind or the one next to you.....I had a gut feeling we would be better off where we took.....Lucky guess.....;)

Very nice Blue Wing Steve, my knees cant handle the mud walk any more, cant seem to drop 30lbs, love my doughnuts, lol

Jim,

I love 'nuts too and dropping 30 would be nice for me as well.......lol

For the most part, mud isn't too bad at San J.......Bring a kid, they have no problems......lol

Nice drake blue wing. Sounds like you guys did well compared to others.

Aaron,

I'm guessing the average was less than 2......It took almost perfect shooting to get the ones we had.....We did get back doored like is usual in blinds as tall as San J's.....One thing I did that improved my shooting odds was moving outside the hotel (shade side).....;)

Think I heard it shot something like a .99 tough day for us.

Just saw that......And that .99 included 35 ruddies......Brutal!

ps......Heard Wister was even worse......And like I stated on Thursday, basically 0 ducks on my friends duck club that doesn't even get hunted.

I'll be in the valley this weekend with a couple of buddies. Not expecting much.
Steve, Aaron the kid you shot with is a pretty good shot, seen him kill birds in a blind across from us at wister a couple of years ago. Helps when your shots are connecting :)

We hunted by Wister that day and it was nearly silent at shoot time until we left around 10. Not a whole lot of action.

Steve,

I live near the Seal Beach Naval weapons station, It holds a ton of Honkers every year along with a handful of Specks that are early this year. The other day I was near one of the channels that surround it and I counted 10 BWT drakes. There were a bunch of hens as well but there were cinnamons mixed in so hard to identify what species the new were.

For what its worth I saw 2 BWT Drakes 2 years ago and that was the first time Id seen them around here.
