I'm really hoping SDbirds chimes in... Checking one off my bucket list for birds (the other is King Eider in Alaska). 2017 I'm planning a pheasant hunt with my dad and our hunting partner/friends. I'm thinking of a couple of options. Option #1: Go to a lodge where everything is done and they just point us in the right direction (We are bringing our own dogs). Option #2: Stay at a nice hotel and go it alone. One of the guys going has hunted SD many years ago on a DIY tripe and we have a little intel on where to go.

Option #1 looks the best but damn it's crazy expensive! Any thoughts? Lodge/hotel recommendations?

I had an amazing, first class hunt with these guys:
http://dakotahuntingfarms.com. Worth EVERY penny and will do it again someday...

Thanks Breacher. I'll check them out. I've been looking at a few placed in ND too. Seems like if it has a ND address the price is cheaper

For those that replied, were those un-guided hunts?

I pretty much want a nice lodge to stay at but have them give me maps of the property and how to best hunt it. I don't need some yahoo with me all day. I'll be bringing my own dog as well. If these places don't offer this style of hunting then I might just go public.

Reviving this thread. Getting pretty close to pulling the trigger. The more and more I learn about the lodges in SD the more and more I'm turned off. It's damn hard to find a nice outfit that hunts wild birds only. Nearly every nice lodge hunts all planted birds. Hell, I could do that anywhere, why would I travel to SD to shoot some pen-raised bird? The yuppie hunts are aplenty.

I've found about 5 lodges (more bunkhouses) that do 100% wild hunts.

Has anybody hunted wild birds at a lodge/guide service in SD? For those who hunted planted birds in SD, was it a joke? Some outfits have limits of 7 and garantee limits and book 40 hunters. Sounds like a nightmare. What am I missing here?

Never done it but for what you're looking for maybe eastern Montana? Research management blocks and CRP. More of an adventure with less people for sure and all wild birds.

Decided to go with a guide who guides on his personal and leased land. Seems more my style Than a canned hunt. I'll create a post about the trip in Nov
