This is a story that must be told.

For this year's opener I took to a place that I had scouted many times and took some advice from @ilovesprig and @Matagi which panned out. It's my 2nd year hunting turkey, hoping to get my first Tom (or a one-time-only Jake)...so exited that I was set up at my perfect spot at 4am ready to go...I know, I know, "but it's public land" will be my excuse ;-)

Needless to say I am the only one there, or at least I thought. Keep in mind I hunt on the boarders of public and private land, with the hopes of luring Toms across for the kill. It's clearly posted the private land is off limits, and we all respect that...at least, most of us.

At 4:15 am I saw two flashlights waving all around the tree line (on the private land side) searching the oak trees for turkeys. Sure enough, a shot rings out...poachers. I quickly call the Ranger (who told me they were up at 3am as it was the opener). Travis was his name, and he was there in a flash to nab both...it was a man/wife duo...and get this, were wearing BLAZE ORANGE vests as to not get shot by hunters...unbelievable.

Travis thanked me and let me know it was a hefty fine he gave them...and then asked me for hunting license and checked my ammo for lead...your welcome I told him...haha

I had one of the best calling days of my short turkey career. Toms were responding and moving in my direction on and off for hours. That off-season practice paid off on the friction calls...I had a Tom soooo close (about 10yds per the range finder) to crossing the boarder to public but got distracted by a noisy hen to him left. I had called him from quite a distance and he was responsive...I guess that is why we keep coming back for more.

No turkey this time, but there is one in my future...hoping the next post is a selfie with a Tom :-0

Great story, way to nail those poachers, had the same thing happen 2years ago in pamo valley .

Way to go and love it when the toms answer a call then start walking your way. They just need to get off private for me too!

Scott,

That's great that those numb nuts got caught......We had them around us again this year......But this time it was shotguns (last year was with bows)......I went years without hearing a shot.....In the 2 days Stefanie, Jacob, and I hunted this year we heard at least 6 shots......And there ain't no public near by and everyone around us is pretty much an anti.....Gamey's got at least one guy I heard......

All right I'm gonna finish reading your story in a minute but a second-year turkey hunter with a one time only Jake rule I think you're crazy man smoke every Jake that comes in . You learn in failure your learning success. Turkeys turkey

Nice job getting Travis on the poachers. Sorry to hear that they set your hunt off to a ad start. Over all sounds like it was still a fun hunt though. Keep it up and I'm sure you'll bag one soon enough.

That's such a bummer but looks like it was a great learning experience. I also caught three trespassers off of Palomar. They were clearly hunting posted land and even crossed a posted gate. And supposedly they are members here...

Anyway, keep at it and success will surely come. I always tell people that it took me 4 years of public land hunting until I heard my first gobble and killed my first tom. It's not easy but persistence and knowing the land is the key ingredients to get one.

I hope they aren't active members.

Amazing what some people will do for a stupid yard bird.

I always say that fishing and hunting are too important to me to ever break even the smallest of rules and trespassing I consider a big one.

Amazing what people will do for a yard bird and "internet fame". It's pretty sad because it ruins the image of the ethical hunters...

The roost trees pretty much stay the same year after year new ones come up. As far as shooting them out of the roost legal half before sunrise. I don't care. what is cool is the hunt. Some people set up along travel paths, some on fly down areas, some are trying to wait or call out for a sattilite tom of having them hot and heavy. I just hope people help each other.
