Heard some yellowtail and Barries were at the Horse Shoe so me my bro Dennis and dad took the Whaler out this morning. Skipped the bait barge and made macks then headed out. Huge cluster of boats in the zone, and I mean Cluster. Sport boat captains yelling at private boaters and guys trolling through anchored boats. We saw a few cudas caught but no yellows. We weren't getting bit so left the area after an hour or so and headed to some honey holes.

Dropped a live Mack to the bottom on a dropper loop and got smoked. Into the reef I had no chance to turn it. Line was frayed so I replaced the 30 lb leader with 40 and went down again. Bendo! Wrestled a 24" sand bass to the boat. Didn't have a scale. Bass calculator says about 8 lbs. Biggest I've caught but the pic doesn't do it justice. Safely released. Caught some nice sculpin and whitefish.

Went down with another live mackerel and got slammed. Fought the critter hard and finally bro made a nice mouth gaff on a 28" ling cod. Were about to resume our yellowtail hunt when Dennis got double spiked by a sculpin. Had to call it a day and get into the harbor for hot water treatment. Kicking ourselves for not being prepared with a burner for heating water. Lesson learned. If you've experienced the joy of a sculpin injection you understand.

Tight lines!

Nice toad bass w/ release!! I love yellowtail... But, I'd rather eat ling! Went to La Jolla 2 weeks ago & slow trolled sardines for 7hrs for nada. Just fed the dogs. We should have tried for some bottom critters!

Thanks for sharing!

We were on a wide open scuplin bite on an over packed boat several years ago. Scuplin to 2.5 lbs or so. We were lipping them like largemouth and chuckin them back over left and right.

There were tons of guys on that boat who got to feel the wrath of Sculpin.

I forgot to mention this irony. Hot water is the treatment for sculpin toxin so when we got into Alamitos Bay we stopped at the first place with a public dock. Ran into the restaurant and asked for a cup of hot water. The restaurant? Ballast Point Brewery, maker of Sculpin beer lol.
