I'm looking for some info as far as names of guides and prices to go on my first hog hunt. Heard there were some for 275-350 but I wasn't able to find any under 500. Any help appreciated.

I don't know of any less then $600. You get what you pay for I would save for a few more months.

I have hunted with Neil (Giant Sequoia Guide Service) many times over the past 2-3 years and I have had nothing but great experiences. He is a good guy and he is supported by an amazing family.

Neils operation is unique in that he has so much property available to him (240,000 plus acres). He has exclusive rights to these properties and rules that come with it. In many of his hunting areas he is unable to have another guide out on their own so this limits his ability to hunt larger groups. It really does not matter how experienced a hunter is. It is an accommodation and liability challenge. I know in some cases he is unable to keep up with the amount of people who call, email, text and Facebook message him daily. I am not making excuses for him but merely pointing out what he is up against. He maintains a large scale operation virtually on his own and has constraints regarding expansion or increased labor to help with the volume of hunters wanting to hunt.

Not every guide is for every hunter or hunting party. There are many pig guides to choose from in California. And many are very good. Neil is definitely among the top bear/pig guides in Ca.

I agree. I hunt with Neil a lot. He takes it very seriously and puts a lot into each hunt, trying to give his clients the best possible experience. I can see how four clients could push the limits of his operation. He doesn't feel ready to expand his hunts with a second guide, and 4 on 1 is never a great ratio for a guided hunt. A party of 4 might be better off with a larger outfit.

Agreed....

I am hunting with GSGS in May with two of my customers, he has a 3 hunter max. I hunted with a guide last year that took 6 of us. It was a nightmare I will never hunt with more then 3 hunters again unless there is two guides. I would say 3 hunters is pushing the limits of one guide. Very hard for one guy to get three guys onto pigs. I would imagine when I go one of us will be sitting a watering hole or ridge while the other two are out with Neil. Personally I don't mind being left alone to DIY but a lot of people that go on hog hunts are not what I would call hunters and they need as much help as they can get.

The guide that took all 6 of us last year was very happy to take all my money and accommodate 6 of us but only three of us brought home pigs. I think the land were on was over hunted as well. Another thing I learned is I will never hunt somewhere that harvest sows. If a guide is harvesting sows that means he has probably knocked the snot out of all the pigs on the land available to him and he doesn't want to stop that income every weekend.

I didn't realize Neil has 240,000 acres available no wonder all of his hunts seem to produce. I respect that Neil knows his limits I have no respect for my guide last year that was looking for a quick buck.

Hell somebody has gotta drive the truck 4th guy.....5 is too many

If you want free roaming Tejon is about it and that place was over hunted last year. Or FHL but the training areas can be small with lots of regs.

There's nothing wrong with taking sows, they don't breed forever.

Each property is managed differntly and they all want successful hunts but at the same time they don't want to run the game off from too much pressure so you trust the guide to know what each property & hunting style he can handle.

Think of it this way you don't get on a open party boat at the harbor then proceed to tell the captain what and where to fish.....

Chad at Oakstone Outfitters is about as good as it gets for turkey and boar. He is very careful about managing his ranches and birds. High quality guide and premium land to hunt. Plus your in paso robles, if your wife is with you its not even a contest with porterville. Stay at the paso robles inn, great prime rib and dowtown nightlife across the street.

Neil cant handle 4. First he has to find 4 hogs, with 4 guys in one truck. If one hog is wounded it takes time to locate. Then quarter and cape, then on to the next guy. Food and water during the hunt, etc. Its alot for one guy.

Ther are many other options that are wired for multiple hunters but dont expect all of you to be together. Neil is the only one with access to his leases so he cant get another guide and send them on their way. That is a limitation but also has advantages. He has alot land, dont think 240k thats the size of tejon but it is in the tens of thousands, good quality game and got some good stuff on my wall I got from neil. I also learned how to call with him.

Neil has access to the forest as well so his expanse and options are massive.
