Where to try on some new boots?

id like to hear what you guys think about insulation in a boot, its no fun trying to sit still when your toes are freezing, and do quality socks make a difference?

On the socks, I recently got a couple pairs of Smartwool hiking socks and they are amazing. I've tried a couple other hiking socks before and they weren't working out. They're $20 a pair but well worth it to me.

Lowa, Asolo, Scarpas are really nice...they sell them all at REI...you can buy it there for there return policy but you will likely pay to full retail, or if you definitely want to keep them, just amazon em..just make sure you get sized correctly...

boots are just like the rest of your clothing. They are a compromise no matter what you do. lets say you do a lot of sidehill hiking in elk country. So you get a stiff pair of boots that keeps your ankles from rolling. i guarantee that you sound like a sherman tank stalking in them. if you get a light pair that lets you feel every twig your feet and ankles will pay the price but you might just get the shot off.

Cabelas will let you order 15 pair and just send back the ones you do not want. Meindl boots made for Cabelas are very high quality with a almost stupid warranty. ( i have not heard if that service level has changed since BP purchased Cabelas.)

Stevo,

My favorite boots were always non insulated Rocky Stalkers.....The socks are where I make up for the cold.....The socks that CWA sells are Merino wool.....Love them & they're my go to for waterfowling.....I also wear the guaranteed for life socks from BPS (10 bucks).....Thinner & great for warmer weather.

ps.....I was given some Lorpen T2 socks at the super bowl party.....Over the calf and 9".....Really really like them.....They're merino wool with Lycra. Very soft and comfy during turkey season.

I like my Meindl's a lot. They are definitely a boot suited for the Colorado mountains though. Since I live in Colorado they make a lot of sense.

I just got an old pair of Irish setters resoled by Red Wing. Those are my lighter boots for upland and what not.

One of my hunting buddies ("That's Just My Game") swears by the Meindl boot. He has warn them for years. He has two sets of the Crispi's (insulated and non-insulated) now and loves them every bit as much.

Wore Meindle's before I got into Kennetrek's hard scrabble hikers. Meindle's are a bit more comfortable out of the box but both work for me (Both brands I have used have been hiker height) I think that the Kennetreks are a bit more stable in the rough stuff from my experience. As far as socks go I keep it thin and wicking and that works for me. Thorlo has been my go to for over ten years. Not much of a fan of insulated boots in the southwest.
