Black buck?

Last night I saw two bucks in my spotting scope about 900yds away. One was a normal looking forkie. The other was a totally black 3x3 bruiser, trying to pick a fight.

Anyone ever heard of a totally black muley? Do they roll in mud like elk?

Wish I had a way to take pics through my scope like some of you...it was weird!

Too bad you couldn’t get a pic. Sounds cool. In shadows at 900 yards, the background can play tricks on your eyes. Maybe his face was white and just didn’t show up? Big old bucks’ bodies often look black or nearly black in shadows when they are that far out.

They were both in a clearing, same light, circling each other. Wasn't ink black. More like a deep charcoal grey.

Man I wish I had pics. At first I thought it was a cow but definitely a 3x3.

Bucks do get darker with age but there are also rare melanistic color variations. Basically the opposite of albinism. You see this in pheasants, and I've seen a few Texas Whitetails with this. I think one got killed last year. You could probably google it. They are literally black. Pretty rare and I've never seen a mule deer with it, but I'm sure it's possible. Go get him....

I saw a doe that color (real dark) last week.

Well I've got an A22 tag, so who knows. Game cameras are still out, so maybe I still have a chance at solving this one.

Could have just been mud, although it seems pretty dry around here.
