Well, after 4 days of hard hunting in and out of three different Conservation Areas I shot this guy with my back on the property line about 2 miles out. Most white-tail hunters don't like to walk, so A CA Hunter like me has an advantage going where they will not.

Nice deer! Yea we have a family friend outside of Branson, MO that walks no more than 100 yds each season from his insulated blind to fetch his buck. So hats off to you putting in the miles like us CA guys are used to on public land. Effort produces luck in this sport I've learned.

Congrats on a fine buck...And it appears you had plenty of gun....lol

ps...I've always thought California hunters were the best, especially waterfowlers.

Thank you. I know 300wm is overkill for deer, but I wanted to break in the new gun. The Area I usually hunt has a plowed corn field in the back 40. About 300yrds wide and 700yrds long. Was hoping to set up on the hillside and get a mid-distance shot like I'd been practicing for. When the sun came up on opening morning I found a field of standing corn. Making all my shooting lanes much shorter than expected. Had to try a few iterations of entry and exit to find something that worked. I was able to figure out the new movement pattern giving me a rock solid 30 yard shot.

WAY overkill for the 300wm with a 4x16 Vortex Viper LR... hahah

Nice buck! Nothing like one rifle that works from varmints to elk...maybe you broke one more rib than a smaller caliber!

Nice Whitetail! I would have to agree with you, I think CA hunters have an advantage hunting some other states. 1.5/2 miles is a pretty common hike in for us here.

Yeah, my normal backpack hunting spot in the SNF is about 5 miles from the trailhead, with a 1500ft elevation change. Just rolling hills out here, no mountains to speak of. Piece of cake.
