Couldnt get it done. Glassed him up bedded on a ridge yesterday about 3pm. Stalked in to 300 yds but couldnt see him because of the steep hill side. Took the boots off and spent 30 minutes creeping in 50 more yards to where I felt I could get set up and start Grunting in hopes of getting him up and to the bench above me with a back drop for the shot. Got set up and threw out a grunt. He instantly stood up and came to the top ridge above the bench. My adreneline starts pumping and I can tell he is gonna play along. Throw out another grunt and he starts to come down towards the bench. Another grunt and he is at the bench. I can see his rack and part of his face. I thrash the brush a little and another grunt , he takes a few more steps forward and I have his full upper body showing facing me and a back drop. BANG..... neck shot. Hike up to him and tag , a few pics and back Track a few ridges to find service and get some help. I knew it was gonna be a tough pack out. Help arrives and were boned out and at the jeep at 11pm. Those canyons suck. Just finished cleaning , bagging and its all in the freezer. Good luck to you all this weekend

Beautiful buck! That's got to be a rush having him come in on your grunts. Was this the one that got the haircut?

He landed right where I took the pic. I actually heard his rack hit the rock when he dropped.

It is an insane rush. I have only taken two bucks this way that have actually drawn in from the grunt. Once they are convinced you are a rival it is all over. I took him at 150 yds but I think I could have drawn him into bow range as long as the wind was blowing down the canyon. These so cal muleys are really a beautuful sub species of deer up close. His neck was swelled up and he was really a healthy deer. Packing out going through a meadow we jumped three different groups of does. He was probably staging and waiting for night to go down and do his thing with the does. I had glassed this area in the morning and seen nothing.

Nice buck. Are you using a grunt call for whitetails ?
Honestly I beleive these calls were originally designed for the white tail hunter. I know it is a white tail hunting thing to grunt but the calls I buy really dont specify a species. Not sure if there is even a significant difference in a white tail grunting versus a mule deer? This last week of the season is usually good for calling.
