    Un-F’ing Believable. Poacher in May?

These pics just came in from my cellular game camera, so maybe I‘m not seeing it right. Is a poacher taking a D16 buck in May?

Special Quail hunt near Lake San Vicente

I must have been out of the loop for a while because this is the first I've heard of a hunting opportunity by Lake San Vicente. https://wildlife.ca.gov/Hunting/Upland-Game-Birds/Hunts#49702462-quail Glad to hear those 5,000 acres are taking steps toward full hunting access.

    Have turkeys dispersed yet?

I’ve got a game cam pic of 15+ turkeys (mostly hens but at least one Tom). Pic is from yesterday. Seems like there should be fewer in a group at this point, but maybe they haven’t dispersed yet. Pics like this always get the spirits lifted just prior to the season. Not sure where these turkeys...

Helping a Lab mix rescue get adopted

My wife and daughter volunteer with a pet rescue operation that brings rescued pets from Baja California to San Diego. I was at one of their adoption events yesterday and learned the story of this lab mix. I haven't posted any dogs in the past and I won't be posting others in the future, but I...

Cellular game cameras: good, evil, or ok?

Before this deer season I bought 2 cellular game cameras. Both less than $100 with a monthly plan under $8/month. Now I’m looking back and wondering if cellular cameras are a good thing. I had a G13 tag, and from watching does last year I knew to be wary of fawns. That was helped by my cellular...

    D16 Rut starting

last night they were 40 seconds apart on the trail cam. Mid-day today they are chasing. Hope it continues until November because I’ll miss the first week of D16. Calling it deer mountain this year!

Father’s Day: new wireless game camera

Got this today. Going to test it out at home for a few weeks then it’s going out into the field. It’s big (easily seen). Will put it well off the usual paths to keep it from being stolen.

D16 opening weekend - traveling unfortunately

I just realized that I’ll be out of town for D16 opening weekend this year (Parent weekend at my daughter‘s college). Actually, it is better this way because my last two years of opening weekend included a warden shaking me down (I was right and he didn’t like that or didn’t know the details)...

What do deer do in this weather? (rain & wind)

Any advice on what deer will be doing in this weather? Only two more weeks in the season, so I’m trying to hunt as much as possible. But if the deer are going to be bedded down then so am I.

D16 and waterfowl open on same day

I heard that the waterfowl opener got pushed back a week and now it’s the same day as D16 opens. How will that affect things this year? Fewer deer hunters on opening weekend, fewer water fowl hunters on opening weekend, or ? Someone even mentioned a rifle shotgun combo they might bring out that...

NWTF on Tues. 7/23? Or recovery from Banquet.?

Do we have a NWTF meeting this Tuesday? Or are we recovering from the banquet with next meeting in August? This hot weather has me dreaming of cool days in the field this Fall. D16 in-the-house soon!

Update from 3/30 Sutherland NWTF Turkey Hunt

Great hunt on Saturday! I was able to join Shawn’s hunt (@Shotnotbot12) as a non-hunting mentor in Brown’s Cove. The morning started off with gobbles on the roost loud enough to get return gobbles, one after the other for about 15 minutes. I’ve never heard that many at one time! A few minutes...

Trout being stocked locally. Good time to fish if you’re not water fowling

Some trophies being stocked at Lake Poway. I usually go for catfish when there (they bite any time of day) but will bring out the powerbait this weekend to catch a trout or two. Cottontail season ends 01/27 and Quail is similar. Now is the time to fill up on trout until Turkey season. Monday...

SC deer hunt during holiday family gathering

Visited family in Charlotte, NC between Christmas and New Years. My brother-in-law is an avid hunter and each year at this time we make it a point to hunt while the families are getting together. This year I don’t have a significant report from the hunt but I always enjoy it when others write up...

Band Tail & Dove hunting turned into 2019 deer scouting

@SDLIVIN and I went back for Band Tails after only getting one shot off last week. Saw only a few but it was still good being out in the local mountains. Figured out which way the band tails usually dodge and so the Dec 2019 season will be a huge improvement for us. Then went for some local dove...
