I just got back from 10 days camping on the mogollon rim just north of payson az. Wow, it is probably the coolest place I have been. We brought our side by sides out there and hauled a boat, two kayaks, and probably 8 floats onto chevelon lake. Not sure if anyone has ever gone to the lake but it is very difficult to get to which meant we had the entire lake to ourselves everyday. The lake is probably a couple miles long where it goes into a creek. Spending all day on the lake wasn't enough time to paddle across it it was so big. Also, it is a rocky 40 -60% grade down a path to get to the lake (no cars or trucks allowed because they couldn't make it over the terrian). The best thing about chevelon lake is that the trout are wild. They used to stock the lake years ago but with very little fishing due to the difficulty of getting to the lake, lack of shoreline access, the size of the lake, and the natural stream for the trout to spawn in has allowed the fish population to strive.

I spent all the entire time on the lake with my fly rod. I had much better luck than most of the group as I stuck to dry flies. The rainbows were big and my brother was telling about a 12lb brown trout he had seen taken out of the lake a couple weeks prior. No doubt the lake holds some pretty big fish.

While we were up there we saw a ton of Elk, couple deer, one turkey, and a bear. We ended up walking up on the bear on chevelon lake in a cove, just about had him shit his pants.

This trip has me going back September 12 weekend to Greer az for the archery otc tag and the fishing. Az has some beautiful country close to the city. I need to move back. I will post the video of the archery hunt once it's all done. Hoping for a monster year!

Pictures from my buddy last year. Both were taking in Greer az. I am hoping we can both get one this year. They are huge out there.

My son drew an elk tag in that area in 2013. I brought tackle to try and catch a big brown during their spawn but the kid laughed at me and said we didn't come here to fish.

Definitely a lot of good areas to hunt elk back there. Where you successful on harvesting one?

Yes, he had a cow tag and shot one the second morning. Squirrel hunting was higher on his list than fishing. They have some cool tassel eared tree squirrels in that area.
