I used to run with Motorola Walkabout 250's (some states they are illegal).......With cell phones, I think two way radios are almost a thing of the past......Kind of like flip phones...... ;D
Two levels here the cheap two ways you get at big 5......midland, Motorola Ect.... Cheap and work if your within a mile or two if your lucky. You still need a permit but many rarely keep that up with the fcc
The second level is the $200 + radios that really do work but they get heavy and can be much bigger......and depending on the watts you may have to take a course for a hand radio licence. It's a day to take the class but good for a lifetime.
Like the flipper said cell phones is my first radio/text then u have the midland cheap ones and they work for most hunting but when we hound hunt the dogs we pull out the big boys because we can get 2-5 miles away from each other and in some steep canyons chase game with the dogs. The cheap ones don't cut it for that hunting
I've had good luck on the cheap ones with the midland & Motorola. Get the one with the most watts and longer range and be prepared for them to break they are disposable due to the cost to repair
We have been using the "TEKK" radios for years and can't say enough about them (they are built to military spec). I have a set that has an encryption feature so nobody can hear your conversation - and I mean nobody. We also used them when buddy boating. If someone found fish, we could call one another in, give out the numbers without anyone knowing.
