Hey y’all, found the forum while doing some searches trying to figure out how to get into hunting. Been lurking for a couple weeks so I figured it was about time to say hi. A few months ago I was talking with a friend and we somehow got on the subject of hunting and he told me about his experiences bow hunting as a kid in Michigan. I was intrigued and he said that he’d like to get back into it and that was when the seed was planted in me. Since then he’s flaked out and I’ve just gotten deeper in my interest. At first the focus was on bow hunting wild pig and deer but at this point I’m interested in trying just about anything edible and maybe even taking up fishing if my wallet will allow it. I’ve really been enjoying all the good info here on the forums and hopefully I’ll get to meet some of y’all at the NWTF meetings.

Matty,

Welcome to SCH......The next NWTF meeting is Tuesday June 26th.....Hope to see you there.

Welcome to the site. First question have you signed up for hunters safety yet? If you get your hunters safety you will be able to buy an OTC deer tag. You will need to get on this ASAP because a lot of the decent tags will sell out by 8/2/18.

Thanks to everyone for the greetings so far.
WD, I figured I'd might as well put it out there in the open that I know nothing haha. I've got zero experience hunting but what I do kind of have going for me is that I was in the Marines when I was younger and I'm still somewhat active so I can walk all day long and I know what it's like to spend a night out in the field.
Tru, I've done the Hunter Ed and I've purchased a license already. I had just been planning to get a pig tag and an upland game validation but the lady that helped me at the DFW put it out there that I should get a D16 tag before they're gone so I went with that as well. I figure I'll just be having tag soup this year but it's nice having something local that gives me a reason to get more familiar with the area. I went out for my first "scouting" hike last weekend but I'm still just spinning the wheels for the most part at this point. Any suggestions as to where to focus my efforts are always appreciated.

Matty,

Talking to like minded folks in person is always better than trying get info from the web.....Number of guys at the NWTF meeting will help you out.....Might even find a hunting partner.

Thank you for your service.

Yeah, those are my thoughts also. There is tons of info on the web but it can be tough figuring out what is quality info.

First off thank you for your service.

Welcome to the hunting realm of SoCal. I just started hunting d16 last year. I found a couple of bucks, but I wasn't able to capitalize. I would highly suggest Dwigh Schuh book "Hunting Open-Country Mule Deer"

Thank you for the suggestion, I'll look that book up. I was cruising through some of the other threads and saw that Jim Van Norman's "Mule Deer: Hunting today's trophies" was highly recommended so I also ordered that book. Looking forward to both of them showing up on my doorstep.

The Jim Van Norman's book is one of the best I have read.
