Jacob and I had planned to hunt both days this week-end (the last one for rifle), but his business/job was just too busy (Drain Mob)...So, we were down to Sunday...This has happened almost every week-end...And like most our hunts, we saw almost no bucks...This includes the best 40 acres in San Diego...Here on the best "40", we had been looking for the big 4x3 I had seen 3 weeks earlier...Had not seen him since that day.

Yesterday started out like most the others...A single doe, then 3 does, and that was it...Walked the property, but didn't see another deer...It's now 9:30 am, and I was hungry...lol...As we leave the property, we see some deer on the neighbors land...4 does and a small forky…OK, and we head for Lake Henshaw...After breakfast, we head back up the mountain...It's now around 11:30 am...As we drive into the prop, we look for the deer we saw when we left...Nothing...Midday, but we decide that we might as well go up into the dark woods, take a nap, and wait till the evening...As we're pussy footing it up the hill, I see a single doe...We sit down right above where we're standing...She's below us at about a 120 yds and walking from right to left...Within about 2 minutes, Jacob says "buck to my left, he's big...Is he the one"...I answer..."Yes, he is"...He's now walking right at the doe and basically coming from where we just walked...With so many trees, Jacob has to wait to get a shot... He clears a big oak and KAPOOW!...And off he goes up the hill and out of sight...Jacob says, "Did I miss?"...I said "he jumped and kicked"...About then, here he comes back down the hill and down he goes...HOOORAAAY!

This old guy was hit just behind the shoulder and destroyed the lungs...Ran about 90 yds...For a buck this size, he didn't weigh very much and had almost no fat on him...His nuts were probably 10 lbs though …Thinkin" he spread those 4x genes a lot...lol

Nice job fellas!! Im more of a duck and dove expert and really dont know alice dyck about deer, but looking at the pics and the fact that the deer was in the area..id say its a safe bet to assume he is the same buck ...fantastic work again!

Congrats guys, hell of a last minute harvest.

I think it's the same buck from 2015.

Awesome, Steve! Good job, Jacob!

We have had a 4X3 around here that is doing his best to spread his genes. He is young. Should be a good buck in a few years.

Nick,

Wish we had that Colorado gene here in the "16"....lol

ps...Here's Tanner's buck he shot a couple weeks ago in Colorado...I think the green score is a little over 210...Of course, he learned to deer here in the "16"....lol

Wow, Steve. That is a really cool buck. They obviously have their spot dialed in if it is the same area as last year.

Nick,

Same area, but tougher this year...I think he got this big boy on the 5th day...Showed great discipline on the smaller 24-26" stuff.... :joy:
