Your young, build up points. Apply for X9A first choice (you will not get it) then D14 (Big Bear) as second choice if that is where you want to hunt. But I believe you said you are 17, correct? There are junior ("J") tags that I would look into as well (J11 and J13 are either sex hunts in the areas you are looking at hunting).

Yeah I’m 17 but I believe they changed the law now you need to be under 16 to be able to get a junior license I don’t know if that includes junior tags. I also bought an elk preference point.

Just looked it up, less than 16 as of July 1. My bad.

Yeah no worries. I was so excited because I didn’t need an upland game, Cal duck and my license was $13 but now I have to pay full price which is ok.

Also how come I can choose 3? How does that work?

If you are building points, then just put in for points. Dont they have a point code you can enter? Doesnt CA have a % of tags for random quota? If so, then there is a chance that he can get X9A. I hunted X9A 3 times in 5 years once.

X9A is always my first choice then A22 and M6. then just built perefece point for pronghorn and sheep. I always try to go forthe hunter liggett archery hunt and this year I'm going to max out my entries for the Owen's valley elk fundraiser hunt.

good luck guys. this makes it that much closerto season. now if I could kill a ton before then.

You are allowed two tags, it makes sense to shoot for the moon on one of the tags you will want to get down the road that is extremely difficult to get. X9A 3 times in 5 years is not going to happen anymore...~4000 first tag applicants, 243 tags given out on points (6 points was the lowest), 26 given out on random.

Sure. I get that. We may just define "building points" differently. If I am building points I am not applying for a unit that I could potentially pull, even if it is only a very small percentage chance. I build the point and focus on that second choice tag, OTC, or hunts for other critters.

I just wasn't sure where the X9A recommendation came from. If you are going to put any random tag just to get the point why not go Devils Garden or Goodale if you are not thinking you are actually going to get the tag in the random draw?

Sorry, this is a sort of a dumb discussion. It probably doesn't need to go anywhere.

I agree with you. My recommendation just came out of wishing I would have done that my first 5 / 6 years deer hunting here instead of just choosing D14 as my first choice.
