I've seen GoFund me pages for a lot less reasons than this.

These bills are negotiable.. if you come up with an amount you can pay, for instance a signature loan at your local credit union you can afford, you should be able to negotiate it down like medical bills. If you call them and explain the financial situation, coupled with "I can afford to pay X amount" you may be able to negotiate it way down. They'd rather get money from you than file a lien, send it to collections, etc. I'm no expert but I've known a few people who have been able to do this. Maybe if your gofundme hits a certain amount, give em a call and tug on their heart strings. From a business standpoint they'll likely get more from you than they would if they sold it to a collections company.
the problem with hiring a lawyer is it costs money.. money that could be used to help pay for a more affordable bill. My guess is an attorney would send a letter saying, my client is broke and can't afford this. Let's negotiate it down. And then the OP will be paying the attorney for sending a letter and communicating, which he could do himself.
Lee...maybe just shine it? Its a medical bill..im no lawyer..but i dont think they can foreclose on your house or jail you if you cannot afford to pay it?? Even in a jacked up state like CA. I worked on and transported 1000.s of people on a private paramedic ambulance for 23 years...id say 70..80 percent never paid the bill..the company wrote it off after hammering the patient with hate mail and phone calls for years...cant squeeze blood out of a rock...if you dont have it buddy..you dont have it...again..sorry for your loss my friend...just my 2 cent thought about the bill.
where lawyers are concerned, it's a damed if you do and damed if you don't. But just like any legal issue, you are money ahead to use a lawyer unless you are well versed in the law. Or take the advice Hatch put forward and let them hammer you with nasty mail until they get fed up when they get no response.
Terrible.... so sorry for your loss. I'd consult with a professional before taking any advice on the internet. If it were me I'd look into bankruptcy and start completely new. Ed F
So I talked to a lawyer yesterday, he wants me to sit on it, I will be talking to at minimum 2 more attorneys. however I don't want to get sued from reach (Life Flight), I don't want this to go court.
that's when the dollars rack up for attorney & court fees. I still in shock, and not thinking straight. My kid's, family. friends and this board have been supportive. and that is a big help.
I tried posting in my machinist board and got a bunch flack from people saying I was begging. which in 44 years of working this has been the only time I have ever ask for donations or money.
I want my lawyer to negotiate for me to reduce the bill to a reasonable amount, During the 2003 cedar my mothers home burnt down, that same year she passed away. terrible year.
I tried to negotiate with the insurance company to rebuild her home. and they flat out tried to roll over me, only offered cash that was 1/4 the amount of the rebuild cost. at that point I it turned over to an adjuster, he took care of it. point is, I learned from that is. if I try to handle it I fear they will try to bully me and do as they feel. My Instinct is to reach out to an attorney to handle the negotiation for me before it goes to court. so far hospital, ambulance and air flight is total of $78000,00, and I still waiting for doctor fees, The hospital is charging me $5000.00, but my wife passed away during the flight. so by the the time it reach the hospital she was passed away. I seriously question that bill it is another case of over charging. something has to change with the way they charge people in their time of need. unreal.
