    Great news for dog runners

i just got a text from my friend up north and looks like GPS tracking units have been voted legal for use on hounds. The F&G commission unanimously voted to legalize its use. I'm really surprised it passed even though the Anti's fieriously voiced their insane opinion against it.

    Turkey Hunting

Might be a little late to spend a lot of time scouting but get to an area early and listen. at this point in the season, you'll want some good boots and a tank full of gas. Use a run and gun method to try and locate a willing gobbler. With hens sitting on nests, gobblers are ranging pretty far...

    Great deal on AvianX decoys

Avians are nice but I just can't break away from the DSD dekes. Midway has the upright hen at $113 too... I need a second job just to support my turkey hunting habit.

    HER FIRST TURKEY HUNT

Not too many multiple hens roaming around now and with the amount of jakes rolling around, I have found that a jake decoy might keep a gobbler hung up out of range. A single up right hen or a feeder will be much more natural this time of the year.

    HER FIRST TURKEY HUNT

Last I heard the birds were roosted in a clump of oaks in the revine above the corral. Take a single hen decoy and soft call. Be ready to sit all day if your daughter is able to.

    No way it's this easy

Thanks Steve, it's really neat how our birds can have that classic rio color and some with really dark almost eastern like tail feathers like Yusuke's bird from last year. .

Finished my mount today. Not too bad for a mountain plaque from eBay for $20.

    Turkey Hunting Basics

Haha sounds good, I'll work on a vid for mouth call and slate call this week. Oh and my comment above is strictly for glass calls. I do the same for my aluminum calls with sandpaper.

    Turkey Hunting Basics

And make sure to use the stone in one direction and run your striker against the sanded grain (if that makes sense). Don't sand in a circle or you'll end up with a lot of squeaks or potentially no sound at all. I like to sand a small silver dollar sized section and run the stone left to right...

Took a Day Off from Bass Hunting...Well Kinda...lol

Beautiful gobbler Steve! Big congrats. It's definitely a tough year to tag out on long beards. I think Yusuke and I will take our fishing rods up tomorrow ;)

    Those turkeys are moving around

Many members sure talked a good talk about how they were on board on passing jakes and even maintaining a one jake limit. Sorry to go on a tangent but there's no reason why these members can't use some good judgement and give it a rest for just one season.

    Those turkeys are moving around

Speaking of future longs, there's one place that won't have too many future longs... MCC.... I can't believe some of our club members pulling limits on jakes. Really disappointed at the fact that my 9 year old has more discipline in passing jakes than grown adults who have supposedly shot many...

    Those turkeys are moving around

heres some photos of a pair of jakes and a few hens out of camera range at the Cotton wood golf course in Rancho San Diego. It's great to see birds in these odd places.

    Double Bearded Beauty +1

Big congrats Steve! I hope one day Yusuke and I can pull a double on a pair of long beards. If these jakes make it through, next year will be awesome. Like Steve said, sometimes less is more. Thursday my son and I worked a gobbler with soft yelps but soon as the jakes showed up and started...

    Fun weekend...

That's awesome Josh! Congrats. Yeah I head similar issues with heavy metal. It works great for me on ducks but I read that a lot of people had a rough time with it for turkey.

Something I noticed this turkey season.

So after today's hunt, it really set things in perspective for me. After hunting MCC opening weekend and Monday, I called in over 30 jakes. With so many jakes, I got to thinking that possibly the mature gobblers are getting run out by the larger bands of jakes. Today I noticed the two long...
