Just split the last week and a half between AZ and Cali.
Had unit 33 mule deer tags. Wish I would have known the secret about 33 before applying for that tag.
We scouted the unit 2 weeks before the hunt. We covered a lot of ground putting over 500 miles on the truck driving a lot of dirt roads. Saw plenty of does but no bucks.
2 weeks later we are back for our hunt. I gotta say our expectations from when we drew the tag to the time of the hunt had gone from pretty high to the bottom of the tank. Seriously, any legal buck would do. Out in the desert before light and back to camp after dark every day. In the end neither one of us saw a buck. Letting some air out of some coyotes was the highlight of our AZ trip.
Left AZ was home for 1 day to celebrate our 31st wedding anniversary, and we were off for central cal with a bear tag and pig tag in my pocket.
1st night we found a great looking bear. It was on. Bear was about 650 yards out across the canyon. It was headed towards us going to the bottom of a steep canyon. We worked our way down. The bear got into some thicker brush at the bottom. My hunting partner Jon was calling yards as it comes into a clearing. 390 yards super steep angle. I dial and send it. The bear sets back and lifts its front leg real slow. We watch for a few seconds. I send another one. This time the bear takes off into the the thick shit. Get down there and find some blood. Not a lot, we tracked it till dark. Came back the next day but lost the trail. I was pretty bummed. Felt pretty sick the rest of the day into the following day. Looking at where the bullets hit the ground, I shot high. With the angle I should have dialed down to about 320.
My buddy had a bear tag also. We spent a couple more days trying to find another but came up empty .
I ended the hunt killing a pig on the last day.
Yes Hatchet, they made me touch it.
By now you guys probably want to know the secret about 33.
I’ll let you guys find out the same way I did.
