Just split the last week and a half between AZ and Cali.
Had unit 33 mule deer tags. Wish I would have known the secret about 33 before applying for that tag.
We scouted the unit 2 weeks before the hunt. We covered a lot of ground putting over 500 miles on the truck driving a lot of dirt roads. Saw plenty of does but no bucks.

2 weeks later we are back for our hunt. I gotta say our expectations from when we drew the tag to the time of the hunt had gone from pretty high to the bottom of the tank. Seriously, any legal buck would do. Out in the desert before light and back to camp after dark every day. In the end neither one of us saw a buck. Letting some air out of some coyotes was the highlight of our AZ trip. 7B6B2A44-EDF7-481D-BAD0-F3C38F9BAB4D.png

Left AZ was home for 1 day to celebrate our 31st wedding anniversary, and we were off for central cal with a bear tag and pig tag in my pocket.

1st night we found a great looking bear. It was on. Bear was about 650 yards out across the canyon. It was headed towards us going to the bottom of a steep canyon. We worked our way down. The bear got into some thicker brush at the bottom. My hunting partner Jon was calling yards as it comes into a clearing. 390 yards super steep angle. I dial and send it. The bear sets back and lifts its front leg real slow. We watch for a few seconds. I send another one. This time the bear takes off into the the thick shit. Get down there and find some blood. Not a lot, we tracked it till dark. Came back the next day but lost the trail. I was pretty bummed. Felt pretty sick the rest of the day into the following day. Looking at where the bullets hit the ground, I shot high. With the angle I should have dialed down to about 320.

My buddy had a bear tag also. We spent a couple more days trying to find another but came up empty .
I ended the hunt killing a pig on the last day.
Yes Hatchet, they made me touch it.

It’s not the same unit in January…..let’s get over there in the next couple of years. We are likely gonna eat the boys buck tags over there this year I don’t think I am gonna be able to make it.
Bummer about the bear I want to shoot one they are high on my list. Always fun chasing pigs with Neil I can’t believe how many are up there right now.
A few weeks left in the 16 more than enough time for you to notch a tag.

This time of year it's difficult to turn up bucks... for me anyways. Congratulations on the hog. Ed F

Congrats on the pig! Is that some sort of gun case you have in your load area of your pack? I ask because I have been looking for a different alternative to strapping my gun to the outside of my pack.

This is good advice. In AZ i'd try to OTC archery hunt it before you pull a rifle tag in the unit.

They are really tough to locate when they arent chasing the women.

Congrats on the pig!

33 didn’t that unit just have a big burn? I hear that’s a unit that really requires you to lace up the boots.

Where in 33 do you live? My parents used to live in Oro Valley in Tucson. Hunted quail there many, many times and coues out in GMU 32, the Galiuros, just above Wilcox. Love that country!! Will be going back in late Jan to hunt quail, rabbits, and maybe some fishing.

It’s an Eberlestock scabbard mounted to the frame. I’ve tried many different ways of carrying the rifle. This is by far the best.

Strong work Darryl. Tough deal on the deer but now you know. My pig from last year has been good eating.
