Good info sir...

I'll add a bit of info, if you see these cute little melons DO NOT eat them. They are called coyote melon aka Cucurbita palmata.

https://www.desertsun.com/story/lif...6/10/28/coyote-melon-desert-pumpkin/92738896/

It is said that the seeds are edible after being dried they were used by the natives many years ago. The rest of the melon was used as a laxative and other medicinal purposes.

Coyotes do eat the seeds I've seen many scat around with them mixed in.

I ran into a dried out gourd 3 years ago and I planted the seed next to my sprinkler head and it's been sprouting every year, but this year it flowered and hopefully will get some fruit.

At the base of the mountains were ravines merge water can be sometimes found. Look for very green areas at these spots. It can be an oasis. I seen wild date palms.
And very green vegetation.
Basically artesian Wells or springs.
Did I mention cattails
If newts or frogs are in the water.
It's safe to drink with straw filter.
Or treat with iodine, or equivalent.
Sometimes water is contaminated
With sulfuric or other nasty stuff.
A lot of minerals present and no sign
Of life is bad.

The info on the cloud about this subject is very sketchy.
I don't like what read. It's been a while since I ate barrel cactus.
According to info I read only the
Hook barrel cactus is edible and can make you sick. Funny I never got sick.
I ate tons of prickly pear apple.
My wife makes me juice out of it.
The prickly pear cactus pick the new
Pedals which would be more tender.
To me it taste a lot like squash.
But like it skinned.
Only eat barrel cactus as a last resort. Manzanita berries are sweet
And I will chew on them when ripe.
It also makes a good tea.
Mesquite pods can be eaten raw and also taste sweet. I had it as floor
And have cooked with it. Good stuff.
I am touching the surface but a lot if was lost from my grand parents
Hope some of this was helpful non the less.
Acorns are very tannic. And has to be crushed then soaked in cold water. It also make great flour.
I can't remember which oak it was.
I would eat the acorns un cooked
Never got sick. So process it
To make sure. You may never need
These tips. But just in case.
One of my favorite is the pinion nuts. High desert elevation.
The are delicious. But a pain to gather. Look for the small pinion trees. They make a healthy snack
God Bless

LOL amphibians are real sensitive to any pollution, or water that is contaminated. LOL don't eat the Newt. Yes they may be poisonous
But we are discussing about a situation were a person is out of water. And need to drink.
I have and know other people who have drank the water. We are still here. LOL.
But it is a good point LP.
We have to be careful out there.
Easy to make a mistake
.
And Jason I like Tacos too

Smokey newt is not on my menu.
but frog legs are.
some day group of us need to head down the IV. Fish and gig for frogs., And talk about big Catfish.
monsters. Hook a whole bluegill for bait.

If any wants to add more info please do. I don't know everything. I sure there's a lot more.
I don't know why. But every thing taste better a at camp. When there is no issue with the drought. A nice small campfire, Dutch oven, with a cook stand. Beef and beans with potatoes and onions. And veggies.
Makes me hungry.
Mainly hanging with friends and family.
