I took the boys and some of their friends down to the beach last night for their first grunion run. It’s still a little early in the season but you can collect in March and we need cut bait for Ganzaga and puerticitos in May.
It started going off pretty good around 11:30 and just like that we were all jumping around in the sand with waves crashing over us yelling grunion. We took home enough to make 7 good bags of salted bait. It was a cold night full of laughter. Great time as always with my boys.

that looks awesome. ive never been. Maybe ill take the grand children. Is it pointless to go out with out a full moon?

If you click on the link I posted it gives you dates and times basically a 2hour window when the tide is at its highest.

Brings back memories of being a kid and chasing grunion at Huntington Beach. Nice that the fun family activity continues!

Pick a beach that is dark. They won't rise into light.

Interesting comment about bait. I never have trouble eating clams, mussel or when we had them, abalone.

To each his own.

Good point, I eat clams and mussel as well. Not a big fan of anchovies etc. Really I just wanted them for our fishing trip in May other than that I wouldn't have taken any home.
