Finally got a chance to get my 61 year old dad and 9 year old son out for a weekend of hunting wild boar. Didn’t want to push it to much being that my dad hasn’t been out in literally decades and my son has only been on a few day trips and dove shoots...so we spent Saturday cruising the ranch, shot some qual and did some bass fishing. Great day! Pulled up to this boar just after first light Sunday morning! When i put glass on him I told my dad this was the biggest one I had ever seen and asked if he wanted to try and get this boar...he hesitated and told me he would rather I take a crack. So I did...felt like a good shot but after watching him take off I realized I hit him way back. My son and I watched him disappear into a deep and steep drainage. After fallowing a blood trail for a while I decided to back out and let him bed, besides that , we were getting past the point I felt comfortable with my sons hiking abilities. So I came back an hour and a half later by myself and went to where I last saw blood. About 400-500 yards later I spotted him! Put my Bono’s up and realized he was still breathing and ended it as quickly as possible. Was a tough pack out but I put my big boy pants on and got him out!!! That hour and a half wait, the thought of not doing anything and everything in my power to see it through would leave an impression on my son that I just wasn’t willing to accept. On the way home I asked my son AJ what his favorite part of the trip was? He paused and said “ everything!” Needless to say he’s ready to go back ASAP and he learned the respect we have for the animals we hunt!

Very cool! Sounds like you were hunting without a guide did you find an outfitter that would let you DIY or do you have a private land hookup?
