    Question for Kuiu users

For warm weather hunts, I wear the ultra 125 merino shirt as a stand alone. I also wore the tiburon zip tee for sun protection. I agree that the tiburon pants are not as durable as others, but when it is 85+ out, you will love the air flow! Since upper body normally does not take the same...

    Catalina here I come...again

I may actually get a second opportunity to get back over to Catalina before Thanksgiving and fill my second tag (either sex).

    Catalina here I come...again

2 of the three were doe. I did not get a great pic of mine (according to my wife, looks like road kill). My doe was a good size. After quartering and de boning, I got 44lbs of meat. The other doe was quite small. I think the buck was also a smaller one. I know it was packed in a small...

    Catalina here I come...again

Weather beat us all. 4 hunters and 3 out of 8 deer taken over 2 days. Oh well, better luck next year.

    Catalina here I come...again

My understanding is that The conservancy has a Wounded Warriors group that comes out for Sept. 11. Wildlife West then has until Wednesday before Thanksgiving. After that, island residents have till the end of the year. Yes, the cost is $2k. Pretty spendy but great accommodations and food are...

    Catalina here I come...again

Well, day one goes to the deer. All hunters were outsmarted! Time for a little bit of rest then get back out for sunrise. We did see quite a few doe with fawn and a few good looking buck. I am on a management hunt, so the beautiful 3x3 standing broadside at 98 yards was not allowed.

    Catalina here I come...again

I am headed back to Catalina for a long weekend of hunting. Hopefully I am as successful as last year. Last year, I filled my freezer with over 100 pounds of meat. My wife and I have finished almost all of it. Two deer provided enough meat for the two of us for the entire year. I hope to...

FS: Kenetrek Mountain Guide 400 Size 8 M

I normally wear a REI Lightweight Merino Wool Hiking sock. That is my go to sock year round. If I need additional warmth, then I have heavier wool socks.

I agree, SoCal is not the place for insulated boots. I thought maybe there would be a SoCal hunter that actually left the region to hunt. I know a fair amount of guys that head to Montana and Wyoming for hunts, but they already have gear. Oh, and their feet are bigger than mine!

Yes, the retailer will take them back. I figured I would offer them up here for a week or so. If nobody wants/needs them, then they go back. I have had problems in the past with returns, so I would rather get rid of them here than deal with getting credit back on the purchase. I really like...

FS: Kenetrek Mountain Guide 400 Size 8 M

Haha, I know I have small feet. The only nice thing is that most stores keep displays of 8-9, so if I want to try something on, most of the time I can grab the display model. Who knows, maybe there is a father whose kid needs a new pair of boots, or a lady is in need of some new shoes. ???

FS: Kenetrek Mountain Guide 400 Size 8 M

I have a brand new pair of Kenetrek Mountain Guide 400 boots in size 8. They fit me perfect and are very comfortable. Why am I getting rid of them? Because they are too warm! I really should have gotten non-insulated. That is what my next purchase will be. I have other insulated boots and they...

    Info On Pig Hunt

Thanks, I filled out the contact form on Neil's website. Hopefully we hear back from him and can get everyone's schedule to work out. I like the idea of NOT using dogs. I also like hearing that taking several pig in a 2-2 1/2 day hunt is possible. Jeff

    Info On Pig Hunt

Could anyone give me a little info on a pig hunt? I am looking at Giant Sequoia Guide Service. Do they hunt with dogs? I have heard from another hunter that using dogs to track and capture pigs is about the only way of going. I am not so sure about this. NBK, I think you have used Neil...

I can now call myself a hunter!

This is very true. One afternoon, during the hunt, we were all sitting having lunch and talking about the "real" cost of hunting. While $2K-$3K seeems like quite a bit, we got 2 deer in 3 days. This makes each dear $1000-1500. Much more reasonable price. If you had to drive any distance to...

I can now call myself a hunter!

Baboltin, the terrain was varied. Everything from flat to steep slopes. I have a whole story of getting that buck, but that is for another day. The guides have 4WD and access to the whole island. They tailor the experience to you. If mountain climbing is your thing, then that's what you may...

I can now call myself a hunter!

The outfitter was absolutely top notch! The guides were awesome, the house was nice and the food was excellent. There was a pretty good chance that we all tagged out. There were three guides and five hunters. I got extremely lucky and was given my own guide. What a great way to learn...

I can now call myself a hunter!

Thanks guys. Yes, I did pack about 15lbs of dry ice. I picked it up Monday on my way to the docks. When I got home Wednesday afternoon there was still some left. I ended up not shipping anything back via freight. I packed both coolers full, 70-80lbs each. There is only one guide service...

I can now call myself a hunter!

Got back from a 3 day hunt on Catalina. Gorgeous weather for the island. I was successful on my very first hunt! My first deer was a buck. I spotted him at 280 yards and stalked to with 75 yards. Got a good clean shot and dropped him...right down the hill. First lesson learned in hunting...
