Well, another hunt in Canada and back to Montana (& decent internet.....lol).

Left on Sept. 9th (opener) for the prairies of Alberta, but it was so dry, hot, and smoky. We only stayed one day.....Every slough was dry and the only birds (honkers) we found were in a wheat field and because of fire danger, the farmer didn't want us driving in it.

From there we drove to our old haunts in the parklands.....The habitat and conditions were just the opposite lush, green, and sloughs were mostly full.....In fact, pretty much from the time we got there we never saw temps higher than 69, lows in the 30's and rained a number of days.

The 1st couple of days we hunted with our local Albertian's with honkers being the bird of choice.....We also hunted just my cousin and I with great results (don't need a ton of birds when there's only two of you.....When the colder temps really hit, we saw a big increase of specks and a major migration of sandhills (illegal to shoot in Alberta....boo!).....Had one epic shoot with 3 locals that gave us 15 specs and 24 honkers.....Dogs were in full retrieve mode.....lol

After that, it started to rain and we went from not going into fields because of fire danger to can't drive in the fields because of mud.....One thing about Alberta.....If you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes.....lol

Here's a few pix from the 1st part of our trip.....The boys were to show up Wednesday (21st).....Lots of stories and lessons in part 2.

ps.....1st spoonie of the year in the books.....lol

Canada Part ll

The boys were supposed to show up at 2:30 on Sept. 21st and we had a great field lined up (also perfect weather).....A little word to the wise.....Get ready and know where your passport is more than 1 hour before your supposed to leave.....As it were, Mike & Mike were late for their flight because they waited for Jacob.....They arrived about 7:00 pm.....Jacob ended up getting a temporary passport and arrived at 1:00 am.....Lesson learned.....Be prepared.....lol

We hunted the spot we were supposed to hunt Wednesday, Thursday morning.....Only difference was, we didn't know exactly where to set-up in the dark, and it's raining/snowing.....The birds came into the field totally different than the day before and we scratched out 12 honkers.....Not bad, but should have been great.

The afternoon was a duck shoot and a good one.....Limits of mallards with a couple of pintail, gadwalls and widgeon thrown in.

Friday we hunted a really good wheat field and did pretty well.....28 honkers, specks, and mallards as a bonus.

Friday afternoon was a kind of a day off because of our hosts kids birthday party.....The boys went out for an hour and got 7 greenheads.

Saturday should have been a great spec shoot, but again set up wrong with one of the farmers and his 2 kids.....Ended up with 13 specs.

Saturday afternoon was a really fun shoot.....Ronnie and I didn't shoot, but had the dogs there to retrieve.....They got limits of specs and 13 honkers as well....Really didn't want to shoot more with them leaving early the next morning.

Really good trip overall, but the competition is getting tougher every year (locals starting to hunt).....If it wasn't for our local connections, it would be a tough trip to make.

Pix from part 2.

Awesome sprig, looks like a lot fun. Something I would love to do eventually. That dog couldn't look any happier

Steve looks like a great trip. Look at that smile on Jacobs face. Nice to here from you, hate when you can't get internet.
