Amazing adventure in Arizona for the Junior Gteam members and Junior Arrow Terror members. Gilbert and the boys were able to get out there for opening day and Joaquin and I would join them on Saturday due to school commitment. It was a slow start for them with the only critters being spotted were some Bighorn Sheep and yotes.
The following morning we headed to some of our familiar areas, where we came across very little sign and decided to move on and explore some new terrain. Not long after stopping at nice point on top of a mesa that Anthony spotted a nice buck making a move away from some hunters. The buck was about a mile out and moving to some cover. The hunters never saw him and moved off in the opposite direction allowing us to decide and try and get close, but he didn't get big by being dumb and snuck out of the area while we made our move. Tired and hungry we decided to head back to the truck for lunch and to regroup for the next move.
An hour or so after our break we headed to another area across the mesa where we got together with Danny, aka ShakeNbake, his boys Hunter and Gunner and friend Ryan. It was great meeting a fellow SCH member out there. Danny told us how his boy Hunter had made an excellent long shot and taken down a spike earlier that day and that they were headed to the area for the evening hunt and asked if we would like to join to check out this area. We were ready to go and joined them for the evening hunt. Once in the area we started glassing and exploring new terrain. After a couple of moves we came to a point and started looking again and just as we were getting ready to move Danny spotted a bachelor group of BUCKS! It got exciting real fast as the boys Gunner, Timothy and Joaquin set up for shots. Joaquin struggled to get into a shooting position and find the bucks in his scope as the other boys were ready so when the deer started moving both Gunner and Timothy were able to get shots off dropping two awesome bucks. Timothy shot a nice 3X4 and Gunner shot a Nice 3X3. After some hard work recovering the deer and some celebrating we parted ways and headed back to camp. Danny would be leaving the next day and we mentioned we would head back to the area to try and find Joaquin a buck.
The next morning we were back up on the ridges glassing and not long after reaching our second point, Gil spotted a herd with 10 does and 2 bucks a fork and a spike. The deer were on the move and worked their way out of range in a hurry. We contemplated making a move to close the gap but decided that it was early and had plenty of time to try and find a better situation to get Joaquin on his first deer. That was one of the best moves we could have made, as we moved to another spot I see a deer in the shadows standing motionless looking towards us. I immediately see it's a good buck and let everyone know that we have to get Joaquin set up for a shot as the deer was only about 170 yds out. Fortunately for us the deer figured if he didn't move he would be undetected as Joaquin had to deal with severe buck fever and finally got the scope on the buck and dropped the hammer. The buck dropped instantly from what looked like a spine shot. The celebrating started as we knew Joaquin had just dropped an amazing buck. He is going to have a hard time topping this first buck! Thanks to Danny and the Arrow Terror team for their generosity in sharing their spot, hope he can post some pictures of the deer his boys took later. Gteam had a blast! Thanks for taking the time.
