Hunting on Indian reservations.

Does anyone know anything about hunting on Indian reservations?

It all depends........CRIT (Colorado River Indian Tribes).......Has a full blown hunting program. As do many other indian reservations thru-out the west......If you're talking about locally (San Diego).....Most say no to outsiders. There have been a few tribal members that I know have taken money to hunt turkeys.

So if I hunted a local reservation, would I need a tag for the zone it's in?

ABSOLUTELY......Your not tribal. I think they're suppose to have tags, but you know. they're a sovereign nation.... ::)....As soon as you leave the res, you'd need a D-16, A-22, or AO on that deer here in SD.

Found this too.....Hunting on an Indian reservation?
Question: The Colorado River Indian Tribes (CRIT) Reservation is in deer zone D12 along the Colorado River. D12 maps show that all of this land is legal to hunt with a California hunting license and deer tags right up to the Colorado River. Can I legally hunt on CRIT Reservation land because it is within California D12, or should I stay away from reservation land? (Anonymous)

Answer: A person who is not a tribal member and wishes to hunt on the CRIT Reservation would have to comply with both California and tribal law, which requires a hunting license issued by the CRIT in addition to a California hunting license and deer tag. You should contact the CRIT’s Fish and Game Department and consult the CRIT Natural Resources Code for further information about hunting on this Reservation. CRIT contact information and the CRIT Natural Resources Code is available at http://www.crit-nsn.gov/.

So tribal members can hunt without tags as long as they don't take kills off the res?

I think I answered that question earlier.....They're a sovereign nation and governed by the feds, not the state. I'm only guessing, but if they leave the res, they would be required to have all the proper tags. They have a tribal council and make the rules for hunting or no hunting....Unless, you're tribal, you will need to meet these tag requirements regardless. I have hunted local tribal lands with a member.....I had proper tags.

If your point is trying not to buy deer tags or skirting tag requirements?....Be careful

As I recall they get tags and some have a 3x or better rule just depends.....

Or they walk put their back slider door and drop the deer in March while eating their flowers.

... as Steve said. They are a sovereign nation. Be very careful.

I've heard some pretty sketchy stories about even having an escort on Indian land. Think it may have been on here or Jesse's.

Not trying to get around buying tags or anything. I wanted to hunt a res but I don't have a tag for the zone it falls in, guess I'll be waiting until next season. Thanks for the info.

It's still the Wild West on some of our backcountry reservations....

Where's wackums back, he can tell us all about the reservations and there hunting laws

It's slippery they get tags they don't like non-natives doing anything I've had to invite to go not to pull the trigger. They do get tags (really only for butchers off Rez.). I heard a bird say something about 2 really good ones have been dropped for already and they don't use bows and arrows anymore. Also it's set up they get razntags if they use them and also they get local tags. They can kill a lot. The Rez has a limit then they go public land.
