Local Trainers?

Hmmm. What a situation!

My dog points. whoa's and ranges the field where I point him to range. But I didn't pay a 'trainer' $600 to $800 a month for him to 'learn'.

Probably need to go pay a 'trainer' like everyone in this post recommends.

Oh, he isn't a fancy lab but a Humphrey's Lllewellin. Guess that's where I went wrong.

ok i had to google a "lewellin" http://www.shoeleatherllewellins.com/llewellin-types to see what the heck he was talking about. They are setters.. learn something every day.

Everyone knows that fancy labs are the brown and yellow variety. when they breed the poodles and goldens to make the other lab colors it fancies them right up

I would try to get out to Prado (http://prado-recreation.com/) for the LRCSC (2nd Sat of the month?) or IVRC (1st Sat of the month- http://inlandvalleyretrieverclub.com/training.html) training days and meet a few of the trainers yourself. Some of them are outstanding and fair, and some tend to be a bit tough IMHO. I think they all have something to offer the appropriate clients and during training days, but not all have places where I would send my own (which are also show-type/"English" labs). Most are around $700/month.

I personally got a TON out of Mike Lardy's DVDs/Books as well as Evan Graham's Smartworks series. Evan is also on a few different forums, including RTF (retrievertrainingforum.net) for answering questions. I'm in the same boat- between work and as "mom" to our 19 month old, it's tough to get in adequate time for all that needs to be done. I am working on getting back into the swing of things and was recently at the LRCSC hunt test weekend with a dog for a working certificate test. Thankfully, many of the dogs I've had have natural marking/retrieving instinct and even without a ton of formal hunt training we have had outstanding luck on quail, dove, and pheasant hunts with them. The only waterfowl I've personally hunted have been on goose hunt weekends at Ciabola (spelling?) out in AZ, and they had their own dogs working the ponds which was better for concentrating (I get easily distracted with the dogs along).

Oh, I used Wolters and talked to Web Parton too. But neither charged $700 a month. My dog now can cut off running pheasants and if he's po'd about the waiting to hunt (Rauhaugee's) will point and pressure pheasants to fly directly in my face. Lol, bad dog!
