Got into southern Alberta last Friday afternoon....Last year, there was virtually no sloughs or water....So we didn't there at all....This year there is more water and we saw more geese....Opening day was Saturday (Sept. 8th)....Decided to use a box blind (layouts were up north) and like what we expected, we only had 2 small family groups come in....We got 6.

Sunday, we were a little more serious, found a better hide with pea straw on the haybale blinds and managed 10....All honkers....We then packed and headed more.

Scouted some Sunday afternoon and one of our farmer friends sent us a text saying for a 30 pack of Bud light ($51.00 Canadian...ouch), he had a shoot for us....Checked out the spot, but it was mostly ducks....We did find another spot nearby that's his land too....So we decided to hunt that....12 honkers, 3 specks (thought we had a limit of 16).

Yesterday, hunted with some new friends from last year on a slough they said was a day time roost....Total bust with the exception on cousin Ron's one Hail Mary speck....In the afternoon, we hunted a pea field with bales....Was pretty good till the lightning and rain showed up....I had a limit and Ronnie had 4 specks & a honker....Left decoys in the field....Lightning is scary stuff.

No hunt this morning....Scouting and maybe hunt this afternoon where decoys are, if the weather breaks.....Snow starting tonight.

A few pix

Rad trip and pics Steve! Nice work. Crazy that snow is already starting up.

Yeah the prices up there are ridiculous... was up in Vancouver a couple months back and paid $30 CND for a 15 pack (yep, 15 pack) of Coors Light and $27 CND for ONE can of Copenhagen.

Fun stuff Steve. Glad to see the rack/cart is still holding up strong year 2 in Canada. Keep after them and keep posting up pics. All of us so cal guys are living vicariously through your waterfowl hunting until next month.

Drew,

1st thing my cousin does is back the cart into a water hydrant....Major damage....Took a small sledge and straightened it out....So I can at least use in Montana......Ughhhhhhh!

Cold & wet today.....Just scouted for tomorrow and picked up decoys from yesterday.

ps.....Tremendously bummed.....Had a great muley buck (actually 2 bucks) cross the road in front of us and stop in field....28"+, heavy, 6x5....Camera was in my bucket....Ughhhhhh again!.....lol

I can fix anything Steve just bring it by when you get home.
I dig the hat shooting a beaver and making a hat is definitely on my bucket list.

Thanks for reporting Steve. Fun reading for working slobs. Why is beer so pricey in Canada?

Socialism/socialized medicine....Anything that's not good for you gets taxed up the kazoo (63-79%)....A carton of 200 cigarettes is $118.00....Steel duck loads (Kent) are $35.00 a box....3 1/2" are $50.00.

ps....Minimum wage will $13.60 soon.

Keep in mind the exchange rate also. Granted there are more taxes, but $1 CAD is only $0.77 USD.

Marlboro 100's carton at Costco $75.80 USD, converted is $98.60 CAD. Question is, is that $118 CAD pre or post-tax? If post-tax, it's not even far off of cigarettes in California ($28.70 per carton) which would be $104.50 USD.

Got zero excuse for the beer though... Just ain't right.

Snowing hard today (28 degrees) .....So we decided to do a duck shoot this morning.....15 GHG honkers, 2 spinners, and a willow blind in a swathed barley field....Had a number of mallards decoy right off the bat and we had 16 in short order....Then the geese started moving around....Ended up with 9 honkers, 2 specks, and one snow.....Heavy straps for sure.

This was Beau's 1st snow hunt (he's only 5 months old)….But he got his 1st duck retrieves and 1st goose (speck)….Trigger was like a kid in a candy store as the birds fell....lol
