Ok. Got this remington 870 for 150.00 with hard case and slug barrel abou 5 years ago. Bought a 30" ribbed barrel from carlson and new bolt aswell about 3 years ago. Recently decided to rebuild my gun since it started jamming and alot of the parts were just old and weathered.

So I went and bought an ATI akita scorpion adjustable stock and forend. New shell latches left and right, forend tub and tube nut, carrier dog spring follower and spring, slide block, carrier assembly, and magazine spring. All these parts are MARINE MAG parts. Then I purchased a competition trap sear spring, volquartsen exact edge extractor, mesa tactical anti walk trigger pin set, GG&G stainless steel low drag magazine follower with red indicator, and a jolly roger magazine cap.

Then I sanded the old camo job I did on it and stacked the new shell latches in place. Custom sanded to fit a rem white diamond into the ATI stock and sprayed the new colors down followed by a triple skull decal I made. Sand and clear coat a few times and put it all back together. Working on clear coats for barrel. And wah la. Sorry for long write up. Hope you guys like the gun. Test fire is also coming soon. Will update with barrel and test fire.

I love the paint job and love to see people breaking down the trigger set. I do mine completely at least once a season. The 870's are great guns and even getter with good paint jobs

Love the reconstruction of the old beloved 870.....Is that paint as shiny as it seems?.

ps.....The key to camo is the dullness of the gun.....Not the color IMO.

I knew that going into the project. Its more of a goof off trap gun. Im not to worried about being seen. Keep the gun low if I take it turkey or yote hunting.

I dig it! Want to do a custom paint job on my 870. Is there a specific type of paint / clear coat that should be used on firearms (besides matte finish)?

I hear duracoat is a good aerosol painti. They sell kits that come with the primer, paint, and finish. I used rustoleom rust protection primer with montana black spray paint and krylon extra durable clear coat finish. Its pretty tuff. And I dont care about it chipping a little. I cant see it doing that unless im walking through tough brush.

i paint all my long guns, ARs, bolts and shottys, and i use rustolium camo with a mat clear coat. i scratch the heck out of them but its easy touch ups every few years. Ive never undertaking anything that looks as nice as this 870 but mine are camo and last well with the rustolium camo stuff.

The montana paint is a very nice european paint. 9.00 a can. Goes on smooth and cures hard. My biggest thing is cure time. After every coat I let dry a full 24-48 hrs. Before I put a new coat on. My old camo job lastest through coyote trips and long hikes and my buddy dropped it at the range and finally chipped it.

The hardest thing was sanding the remington 1100 white diamond piece to fit inside the ati stock lol. Looks clean and natural though. Thanks for the positive feed back guys.

Nice work... I've been wanting to renovate my 870 also. Let me know how the new parts help, if any, with the cycling and jamming issues. My Express model has extraction problems when it heats up or when I run certain shells. Been reading up on some of the extractor upgrades and stuff, but I'm curious to know how yours works out. Did you polish the chamber or de-burr anything at all inside?

The reciever end of the barrel had no burs. But I did notice my left shell latch was not stacked in place anymore and was slightly bent inwards. So im assuming with the new latches and extractor I shouldnt have any more problems. Another couple days and ill test fire.

couple tricks for painting your gun

one use primer in super super thin coats with sanding between them. Use halogen lights to bake the finish over night between coats. Yes its going to take a week to fully paint a gun. use Matte clear coat in maybe 4 very very thin coats baked over night. and it will be a very tough finish. I hunt in the salt ceders a lot and this fully protected my old super90 for years with out cleaning.

I refinished an 870 from the ground up and used the duracoat aerosol in the color "870 black." Looks great. It's not bulletproof though. Took it out on Sep 1st and it came back with a few chips after one day and I was meticulous about prep-work. Not that big of a deal though, still looks fantastic. I'm going to do my 870 duck gun in the off-season with a camo pattern using the duracoast aerosol.
