My bad, That is a jackphesalope, You have to draw for them in Cali and you better have max points if you want a tag. I saw once once in 1968 on the kelp beds off Point Loma .....

I have heard stories of them but I thought they were extinct.

NBK - No they are known to prefer abalone and preferably the pink ab's so its no wonder that we don't see them much anymore.
