There's a problem on the mountain

We were hunting Palomar mountains on Monday morning about 8 am could hear dogs barking in the distant. Didn't think much about it. I could hear a long ways being in a tree stand. Well on Tuesday mo=Ning my buddy's in his tree stand.. hear what sound like a pack of something coming him way. Just as it got closer. He sees a big all white dog with a little black patch. And it's a larger dog. All of a sudden 4 more show up. Sniffing around the base of his tree stand. Not seeing him they take off to his left into a brushed area. They chased a doe bedding in the bushes out and chase it right under his stand... now my question is who dogs are they no collar. And are they feral dogs. And how dangerous are they. My buddy said to me that he has had a couple of confrontation with one of them. Just staring at him and then going into the brushes.... could be an issue. Another question if they become a dange. Do i have the right to protect my shelf and kill it.if I don't feel safe..what's everyone take on this. Going to let DFG know and the Forest department too.

Yeah, and they aren't treated much better on the res than a coyote. I hunted the Navajo and they told us to shoot them but I didn't do it (call me a bleeding heart liberal lol).


As for self-defense, you 100% are allowed to defend yourself. Carry a tube of pepper spray and a large knife. You 100% can protect yourself and kill a dog or two if needed, they aren't impossible to kill. My law enforcement buddy told me about how a guy choked out one of their police dogs.

Being that I'm a dog lover it's a hard thing to do. It's not the dogs fault that humans are they way they are. Dumping they off in the woods. To survive on there own. But when it comes down to me or it. That's where we must do what we must do to survive as well..

It's been a problem for decades out there, my cousin was attacked in 1988 at age 13 by a pitbull and a german shepard, he killed them both at under 30 yards and closing at a run. I was circled at least 5 dogs about 20 years ago, growling and bluff charging, 3 of them didn't make it off the hill. A few years ago a buddy was chased up a boulder by several dogs but he's a dog lover and wouldn't shoot them. I asked the GW about it years ago and he just said to do what you need to do. This is all in D16.

I was hunting an MCC property [Dyche Valley] last year and a pack of howling dogs ran past me. Thought some guys were running deer with hounds but I never saw another human. In Hawaii, where I came from, wild dogs are a huge problem. Have friends who had to kill dogs, very often pit bulls, in order to keep from being mauled. Lots of those dogs have collars and spend the evening in front of a fireplace with their owners. It's not the dog's fault, it's the damn humans who are irresponsible.

Very likely they are off the Rez. Years back I was calling coyote near the reservation in D19. Get set up. Start to call and get movement a half mile down in the canyon. See some black then some white some tan, oh shit I am calling in a pack of wild dogs, at least 15 or more. When they crested the ridge I had no problem letting them know I was not a dying rabbit.

I have no sympathy for wild dogs. They like to eat what I like to eat. shoot to kill.

If your bow hunting and have an encounter, I hope you have good knife and know how to wield it.

Update....... my buddy who's been camping up in Palomar talked to a game warden about the issue he was unaware of the problem. And told my buddy that he would handle it and fund our who dogs they are and tell him the laws regarding his unleashed dog chasing wild life. Was told he could go to jail. He said he thinks the owners are from the girl scout camp... He asked for a little time to deal with it. (48 hrs)They exchanged phone numbers.... So today being Sunday we hunted and you could here the dogs barking.. Ran by my buddy in his tree stand 3 of the 5 dogs. About 20 minutes later a buck shows up about 50 yds in front of him behind a tree working toward him,he draws back holds and all of a sudden dogs appear barking and the buck take off. He's was pissed off.... it happen 2 more time that morning dogs chasing does.. my buddy has it on his phone video.. Gave it to the game warden..... He even went to the general store and asked about anyone knowing who owns the dogs..... crickets.......Will see if anything gets done. Calling DFG to follow up....Let everyone know what they say...

Even then I'd rather let DFW or a local do it as the risk of potentially killing somebodies pet is just not worth it in my mind. If you make a mistake and kill somebodies pet you've just taken somebodies buddy away in a horrific and traumatizing manner and opened the door to physical or legal conflict justified or not. What if the owner comes around the corner is smoking furious and comes to beat your ass and now you are in the position of now having to defend yourself with lethal force? Just opening up a can of worms that can spiral downhill to worse things real quick. All because a dog did a dog thing and chased a deer?

A couple of years ago I was out during archery season with Truduct's dad. (Not on Palomar) As we were coming down from the place we were hunting were rounded a switchback to come face to face with a pack of three dogs. No collars. They were not friendly. Luckily, we both had tools to convince the dogs to leave and they did. I don't know whether bear spray works on dogs and I hope I never have to find out.

I hope DFW sorts out the situation on Palomar.

Put yourself in my buddy position you take a week off to hunt and every day you see and hear the dogs when is enough is enough. It's being done on purpose to hurt and the owner knows it. If it attacks someone then what.... Will be doing what the warden ask but after that who knows. If it's not dealt with. What would you do?

Me too. That a hard one to deal with. I probably wouldn't. It would haunt me for the rest of my life.....

It's a shame who owns that land now. From your description I know exactly where you're hunting out of and know the property those dogs are allegedly from. All I can say is, no dog is safe off it's property.
