Jacks

On my last trip to Julian area the only rabbits we saw were off the main roads on our way up. I did not see one rabbit while scouting. We had a .22 air rifle hoping to get some meat for the pot but they seem to stay near the roads. I think they rather take their chances with cars rather then be a yotes dinner.

julian hold tons of rabbit. look in draws with sage brush. walk slow and observe. ive taken a few within 20 yards with my bow. after noons are great, and i push them if its during the day, they run stop and i shoot. its fun stuff.

Man, hunting Jacks with a bow and arrow? You got skills! I just started using a 22 riffle and they seem to run forever...much easier hitting them with the shotgun but more meat gets messed up.

For rabbits I like using #4 or 6 shot.
That way only couple pellet hit them.
When covering more territory.
Works for me.
I also like using 22 call pellet rifle
Stealth mode. Stalk quietly.
Rabbits stick around in small area.
I sit and wait for them.

if you practice your woodsmanship you'll start seeing more rabbits at closer ranges. i was out turkey scouting and ran into some quail and missed those suckers by inches. ive been walking slower and focusing on noises and where i step and in return have seen far more game. this weekend i was getting into quail within 10 yards before id noticed them then theyd fly and scare the shit out of me. the rabbit here was shot at 27 yards using my new rage turkey extreme broad heads. there suckers fly STRAIGHT! and do alot of damage. i put his face back together and flip him over out of respect for the animal and took the pic, but im sure you can get a sense of the carnage.

another strategy is what longbow mentioned. sit and wait. find bushy areas and transitions to open flats and most of the time around sunset they will come out and thats where you can take aim.
good luck!

Awesome post! I had the opportunity to get out and hunt with another member here. He brought his compound bow and was very successful, here is a video. I really was surprised of the similarities in th hunting styles between airguns and bows. Very primitive and teaches us to get closer. Here is a video of one of our most successful trips.

Hunting rabbits with a bow is very cool. Gets me fired to start using my long bow. Show us a pic of the turkey broad head. If I had used some like that I could nailed some turkeys in past. I hit the them but not solid. didn't like that.

Yes with a traditional bow it even gets more personal. You have get very close. 40 yards or even closer 20-30 yards. Awesome video brother.

Those blunt heads really pounded the rabbits down. Haha kinda brutal went all the way through, very effective nonetheless.

I usually use these G5 Small Game Heads but I wanted to test out these new broad heads and I liked them. flew straight.

Sitting and waiting drive me nuts, I get impatient. I have to commit sometime and just do it to see what happens.
