    hunting rifles

Depends on what game you are after. Varmints (coyotes, fox, bobcats, etc.) AR-15 semi-auto hands down. Big game - bolt action

New Hunting Boots - Snake proof worth it?

I bought some Rocky snake boots from Cabela's a couple of years ago after a buddy was bit and killed by a buzztail. They are super-comfortable and NOT hot at all. I love mine. I have the regular boots, not the side-zip model...

    Scouting Idaho

My brother just moved to Caldwell and will be hunting around the Elk City area this year. I already have next year all planned out! I WILL be hunting Idaho in 2014!

    Interested in predator calling

Get a good cottontail and jackrabbit call. I personally use the Circe cottontail and the Pure DC-1 jackrabbit. Both have excellent sounds. Start with the cottontail at a low volume and work louder as time progresses. If nothing happens, switch to the jackrabbit and, again, go from a low...

    Pure Predator Calls

Bryan just sent me a DC-1. I haven't used it yet, but it's the best-sounding call I've heard yet...good, raspy deep jackrabbit sound. It should be a real winner!

Howlers...to use, or not to use?

Wheels is right on! Use howlers to locate coyotes. Once you find them, use the distress calls to bring them in. After a shot, or after a string of calls before you leave the area, use a pup distress (ki-yi) call, especially right after pupping season. The only howler call I know of where...

    Rattlesnake

Buzzworms are great eating! I usually cut them into chunks and put them on foil on a BBQ and cook them in butter laced with some garlic.

    Vacuum sealers?

I have had two Foodsavers for many years. Both work fine. The auto-shutoff on the big one took a crap on me, but I just hold the vacuum button down until the air is gone and then just manually seal it. They are not for heavy-duty use though.

    Thor muzzleloader bullets

Has anyone had any experience with Thor bullets? They are identical(?) to the Hornady FPB with the exception of being all-copper, and therefore legal in Kalifornika and Colorado. Basically, they are Barnes "X" bullets, a minnie-ball, with an expansion ring to seal the gasses when the rifle is...

    Berger vs Barnes

I second John's answer 100%. Bullet material retention is mandatory for big game. You don't want a bullet that explodes or sheds mass unless you are varmint hunting. Barnes bullets are noted for their accuracy. I have used them for years and have always been 100% satisfied with the results...

First post. Need help hunting coyotes!!!

Since you are a local to San Diego, you might check out http://www.sandiegocountyvarmintcallers.com/ We meet on the third Monday of every month at 7:00 pm at Coco's restaurant in El Cajon. Like "Wheels" said, go with #4 buckshot in your scattergun. Much better than 00 buck. Regarding your...

    TO BEGIN?

It depends on your budget. The Lee kits (there are two different ones) are fairly inexpensive. Not the best, but they do work. If you can, get a better kit. That RCBS kit at Fine Firearms is one of the best on the market. It's guaranteed for life and has just about everything you need in...

    Reloading components

I started out at 24.0 grains and went up to 27.0 in half-grain increments. No signs of pressure at all. Using CCI 450 magnum primers and Hornady 53-grain V-max BT bullets. Best target (24.0 grains) was a 1/2" group (100 yards - 5-shot group - 3 rounds through the same hole). I'm a happy...

    Here's "Lucky"

Just worked out some handloads for "Lucky". Using 24.0 grains of H335, CCI 450 magnum primers and Hornady 53-grain V-max boattail bullets produced a five-shot, half-inch group at 100 yards. Three bullets went through the top hole. This is a five-shot group!

    Man bites shark!

I just sent John a write-up of the shark story. I believe he's going to post it here on the website. Basically, it was caught in 2000 off Cat Harbor (back side of Catalina Island) and took 3 1/2 hours to land. It was 10.5' long and weighed just under 800#. 1/4 of it fed 250+ people and the...

    Man bites shark!

When/if you get your hands on some fresh shark, here's one of the best recipes I've ever tasted...and it's simple. Mix up a small bowl of mayonnaise, seasoned with onion pepper (or lemon pepper) and garlic salt. Mix well. Take some heavy-duty foil and turn the edges up to form a shallow pan...

    Reloading components

Haven't tried it yet. Haven't been able to get the bullets I want. However, I was just notified that a backorder of 200 of them was shipped yesterday (on my birthday even. What a birthday present!) All my cases are ready to go when they get here. I should be building some test loads the...

Sounds great! Done! I will call you and we'll make arrangements for my son to pick them up when convenient for both of you.
