You did your scouting , but aside from that, it sounds like you were ill prepared to spend that much time out there hunting. Little food, and by the sounds of it somewhat questionable creature comforts to make the trip more enjoyable. You did manage to take the whiskey.
Real sorry you did not find the heard of elk you saw when scouting, but like the saying goes shit happens. I have hunted cows in NM of four days, and never saw anything except Bulls, one of which was massive, oh for a bull tag. Better luck next time.
