Background. I'm a 55 years old retired SEAL, rifle hunted deer all my life in dry AZ and CA mountains. Never hunted elk.
Bought a Bowtech Carbon Icon in Feb, practiced 3-4 times per week and can hold 5" groups all day at 50yds.
I wanted to share some lessons I learned on my first solo 6 day...
I just bought my bow in Jul. I I've been shooting every day, fine tuning sights and my form. 1, 000s of arrows, then broadhead tuning. I can get out to 75 yards in the backyard.
Errors really start to show up at 50 yds and more.
This my group at 65 yds. With 1 broadhead and the rest field...
Did 3 mile hike in to check game cameras with a full (48lb) pack to check the game cameras. HOT!
Bumped a doe and fawn. Glassed a bedded forkie with the spotting scope.
Got 5 legal bucks on the game cameras.
Thought I'd share two of a young 3x2, one in velvet and one hard horned.
There...
Prestage 5 gallons. Lasts me 5 days with a mix of sitting AM/PM and a few hours of still hunting during the day.after camp is pre staged, I generally carry in just water and weapon (1 gal per day).
If noone has given it a good cleaning, get some copper solvent. Let it sit in the barrel and neck. Work it real good with a barrel and chamber brush. Repeat two or three times. You might be surprised how much copper fouling can impact accuracy. If the barrel isn't shot out , you might make...
I shot an old WWII sporterized 8mm Mauser for deer since the 1970's when I was a teenager. 2012-2014 it was shooting 2-3 inch groups at 100 yards. I set my limit for deer at 250 and had one shot kills at: 215, 225 and 225, from a solid rock bench rest here in D16.
Last year I was going up elk...
I've got D16 and waiting to purchase 2nd tag for A22.
Also have Idaho bow tags for any deer/elk archery for the whole month of Sep.
A busy fall/winter!
I vote for 2 mt lions. Front animal has rounded cat-like haunches. Deer rear ends are more ssquare.
Still lot's of deer on camera, including several bucks in velvet. Too soon to start counting points...
Hope the lions clear out before the season starts.
Also got a cool pic of a hawk...
Boat ramp is closed but I can hand launch my 10 foot inflatable. Use a 20 year old 3.3HP Evinrude and troll the shoreline.
Works great. 4 years ago pulled in a14lb 12oz rainbow. Tied the lake record to the ounce.
Looking at it inside, the "thing" wife and I saw is the 4th leg. In the sun, it looked like something hanging between the back legs.
Seemed weird, up and walking. Pic is all clear to me now.
Here is a pic of the 1st day stringer. 16lbs. 1 x 8lbs, 1 x 7lbs and 1 x 1lb.
Next day was 4 fish for 12lbs.
Nice fights on 4lb test, trolling Thomas Bouyants.
Got this on my game camera.
Does it look like a coyote giving birth?
Wish I had the camera on multi shot so I could have gotten an other angle.
So what does everone think. Another varmit on the way?
Checked cameras and looks like the big cat was just passing through. Plenty of deer on all cameras. Looks like all the antlers have dropped. Saw a couple of bucks with bone spots on their forhead.
Anyone know when they drop in SD county?
