Archery is less crowded than general. That said, the crowds die off after opener for both. 400 yards is a liability, I'd go further. You can't hike far enough to completely get away from other hunters here. Obviously the further you go the less the chance but you're never more than a few miles...

Like with most things, the more time you can spend doing it the better. The NWTF meetings will certainly help cut the learning curve.

Yeah, the answer is somewhat circular, unfortunately. Some like being around water (within a mile) and will hit it every day. There is also way more water than you are aware of and they only need water every several days so they may be far more dispersed than you are thinking. Hunting...
