I did the boat us class, had 50 safety questions and 10 California specific questions @Lungpopper

so all done with it... the telling thing was in the calif specific section of the test 30% of the questions were related to registration ( state wants its money ) and not safety

They passed a law mandating boater training, it was required for younger captains at first and now it's 60 and younger. Everyone by next year but not people renting boats......
