I was back in AZ this weekend, this time in the northwest (Region 3). On Friday night we picked up my son and his buddy who just finished hiking the AZT from Tucson to Flagstaff. We spent yesterday nosing around Prescott National forest. I picked a decent (USFS) trail in order to cover as much ground as possible, and we scouted on foot between 6300 and 7800ft. No sign at all above 6500 feet, but below that, most of the buck brush is pretty extensively chewed. I was pretty surprised, given daytime temps and the abundance of food and water up to 7400ft at least. But it's been pretty cool up till this weekend over here so I suppose they haven't had any need to venture to the higher elevations yet. Anyway it's big country, and rugged in places, so I'm hoping to arrange to hunt with a guide. But if he's occupied it will be DIY bow hunt. As a first time DIY hunt, odds of harvest would be very low, but that's okay. Nice country, and folks I talked to are pretty hunter-friendly.
