I saw that a few different companies offer a 140 grain barnes x load in 357 magnum. How does the barnes x compete with hardcast lead flat nose bullets? Which one would penetrate further?

If you want a bear bullet you want to go with the hard cast. Depends on what you are doing if you want a hunting bullet for a HAM hunt go with the Barnes X.

I’m guessing hardcast penetrates a little further?

Hard cast Keith style bullets (Elmer Keith look him up) It is a semi wadcutter and you want it in a 44 mag if your are carrying a handgun. I had a friend that went to Alaska to salmon fish a few years ago and he took a 44 mag with him on a chest holster so he could fish salmon and have a gun handy if need be. The guide told him it was a good idea because if he got charged by a bear he could use it to shoot himself dead before the bear mauled him to death and he would not have to suffer through being chewed to death. Just sayin.. The best quote I have heard about handguns is what John Wayne said - The only thing a handgun is good for is to fight your way back to the rifle you should have never put down in the first place..
