Well my cousin got it done, this is his 3rd buck this year, he filled both CA tags and a Utah tag on a decent 4x4.
A few days ago we made a plan to go camp out and try to kill some bucks. Me, 2 of my cousins, their two boys (5 & 6 year olds), and my buddy, all loaded up Saturday and headed up to the campground. My girlfriend couldn't make it, due to work. Saturday even there was a real nice storm, hoping it would be clear in the morning we loaded up in the trailer.
We got up in this morning and head to spot me and girlfriend had been chasing those bucks around a couple weeks ago. My cousin (Matt) and my buddy (Josh) hiked "Melton Ridge" where Matt had saw a buck on Friday. At the same time me, my cousin (Kyle), and the two boys parked up high on a ridge hoping to see something, we couldn't hike too far because of the boys.
At 7:30 we hear a shot, about 2 miles away. After a short conversation on the radios, there was a buck down. I grabbed my pack and headed over to help pack the buck out. By the time I got there, the buck was quartered and ready to go.
Matt and Josh told me the story while we celebrating about the buck. At 7 Josh spotted a deer about 1000 yards off, it had disappeared behind a juniper bush. After a few second he sees the deer again, being pushed back by another deer! They realized it was two bucks duking it out. They grabbed their gear and went after them. When they got to a vantage point 300 yards from the bucks, the bucks had gone their separate ways. A few minute after they realized the bucks were gone, they hear a noise to their right. Josh looks over and 30 yards below them a forky steps out from behind a bush. Matt put his gun up and popped him. A few minutes later is when they radioed us.
The plan was for Kyle and the boys to drive to the base of the canyon were the buck was at.
Only a quick down hill 2-3 mile hike back to the truck.
Over all it was a great day.
