Get a close look at Utah mule deer

Thats an interesting article. Let me ask this question. In Southern California, why do we have a rifle season during the rut when deer have let their guard down? Wouldn't it make more sense to have the rifle season before or after the rut? I'm sure there's much more to it that I don't know but it seems that would do a lot to boost not only deer numbers but quality as well? Is this about the same for other states as far as the rifle season's open during the rut?

I know Michigan firearm season start on November 15th every year and runs through the end of November, which is usually during the rut. That date is off tradition though. Archery season starts October 1st and runs through the end of the calendar year. North Carolina archery starts in mid September and runs through the end of the year. General firearm season starts in mid October. The rut there can turn on and off in the matter of a day due to the temperature, but mid october the rut should be coming into swing. Firearms season runs until the end of the year there. (with the purchase of a big game license in NC you can kill 5 deer, a bear, and a varying number of turkey usually 1 or 2. only 25 bucks too) Now in both of those state muzzleloader season is thrown in there. MI it is after the firearms season and NC it its before the firearm season. Long winded and scrambled a bit but those are the two states I know about.
