How does wildlife weather winter?

Interesting read. I just learned that bears in the Southern California mountains, typically do not hibernate due to the mild winters. I read another article which used a similar statement to explain how/why bears in Socal can get so much bigger, although there are a lot less of them compared to the northern portion of the state. I never realized that. I wonder if bears in parts of AZ are the same way.
