Wow - the Outdoor Life writers are truly bored. And living in some sort of firearm bubble.

Being opinionated sure makes reading some of this stuff tuff! :D

You can learn something from almost any article. There is always a takeaway. That is the beauty of the inter-web. ;)

Lee thanks for the article & info. Colorado is incredible & over the counter tags. Awesome !!! What gun are you looking at for your elk rifle

For sure 7 mm mag. But I think I got talked into 700 rem hahahaha. & a MOA or Mil Dot Vortex scope.

I have a Remington 700 Sendero in 300 Win Mag with a Vortex Viper PST FFP scope on it and it is my most accurate hunting rifle out of the box 1/4 MOA at 100 yards using Barnes TTSX 180 grain ammo. Great gun but a little heavy.

Stump

Remington 700 is the best gun ever made hands down. Why do u think so many other manufacturers copy the design. 7 mag is a great caliber to. Ive watched a video of a 7 mag putting a bull elk down past 1000 yards very impressive.

7mm Rem Mag is certainly a front runner regarding elk cartridges (and may be the very best). I also like the .300 WSM. But most any cartridge you shoot well will do the job within reasonable distances and with good shot placement. I think most folks get wrapped around the axle on this debate (and find most of the opinions come from folks with little or no elk hunting experience).

My top factory rifle picks would be (in order)

Sako 85 Stainless
Sako A7 Roughtech Pro
Tikka T3 Stainless
Model 700 Remington Stainless/Winchester Model 70 Stainless/Browning A-Bolt

I do have to get in on this. My grandfather dropped 100's of elk with his savage model 99 with a peep sight chambered in 300savage. Ive hunted and killed many a hog with the same gun. So yes many smaller non magnum calibers will work on elk. It's just a matter of getting close enough and placement.

What about Weatherby? I always felt they are on par with Sako....

actually every bolt out there has been copied from Mauser K98 action.

Nice to see the best 2 rifles in history made the bottom of the list...Winchester Mod 70 & Remington 700... ;)

Good reads about both, of which I own.

I was pleasantly sup-prized that the model 70 is one of the best bolts ever made. I would like to own one. I decided to stick with 308 due to it's ammo availability.

Above is just my opinion and with that said, the new Weatherby's are not in the same league as the Sako's. Actually not much are. But again just an opinion from being in the industry.

The model 70 Winchesters are great rifles but they are based on a 100 year old design. They are built like a 1960's car. Not a bad thing but technology has surpassed it along time ago.
