Merganser's are another diver type duck that you will see occasionally in SoCal.....Hooded & common's.

Jesse......Post up that great picture of that common merganser drake. I only have a hen.

Great thread. I might have a pic of a merganser drake. My uncle killed one on a hunt with him in Texas. Even the guides dog wouldn't touch it that tells me don't shoot em lol

1st pic SCAUP
2nd pic RUDDY
3rd pic BUFFLE HEAD (w/ a gadwall on top)

Ruddy sittin pretty. While they are a diver and prefer to swim away from you, they WILL fly (normally only a foot or so above the water). I ate a large amount of these dudes last year and, if you brine them right, taste just as good as a greenhead. Quick to cook and keeps your portion size below your daily cholesterol intake.

Left out Common Goldeneyes (actually 2 species, Barrow's would be very rare in SoCal))......Finally found a fair picture of a pair of drakes.....Similar looking to a bufflehead, but twice as big. Hens are brown with a bright golden eye....Beautiful duck

Sprig, you say common in our area, yet all your pictures are 20 years old! Havnt been taking the camera out lately?
One other thing, in my opinion, if you can't tell what species of duck is flying by, or be able to tell hens from drakes, you shouldn't be duck hunting. Might as well go shoot skeet or Eurasian dove if you just want to shoot or kill something.

those three gentlemen look like they all got birdies on the 9th hole duck pond at the local golf coarse :D

HA! Didn't notice that before. That'd be rad to play an 18 and get to pop off some ducks at the same time! MAN if they let me just do bunny and coyote, I'd be stoked!

Sprig has taken a vow of spoonage since 2003. So when you see old pics it's because of that

ADS,

Hell, some of those pix are 40 years old.....But you're right, I need to get out more often, learn my birds, and take more pictures..... :D

ps......Since you sound like a duck ID expert. How about sharing some of your mounts & waterfowl pix...... :)

pss....A couple of pictures from the Salton Sea today of fine Northern Shovelers/spoonies/bootlip/faciallyendowd ducks in the feeding position..... ;)

I'm working on the pics, I mainly use an I pad at night to explore the web. My finished work pics are on my pc. I'll get my butt on here in a minute and do it. It will be on the taxidermy thread though. I might not be an expert, but I've hunted enough to not just shoot everything. I like to pick out the drakes and prime mature birds to mount or gift to other taxidermists to practice on or use for themselves. It's not that hard to do unless theres not much light to do so.

posted the pics in the taxidermy section, but got a pm saying im not contracted so they will probably be deleted...look fast.lol.

So you call Trig out...Then post your birds in a section not related to your rant........Come on dude....It's about teaching, not profit
